How to remove the "Set colors" browser hijacker?
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Set colors?
Set colors is the name of a browser hijacker, endorsed as a tool capable of improving website legibility by allowing users to change page background and text colors. Instead, this software promotes the fxsmash.xyz illegitimate search engine through modifications made to browsers.
In addition, Set colors collects information relating to browsing activity. Since most users unintentionally download/install browser hijackers, they are also classified as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications).
Browser hijackers mainly target popular browsers. Following successful installation, they assign illegitimate web searcher addresses as browsers' homepage, new tab/window, and homepage URLs. Set colors modifies browsers in this manner as well. Hence, with this browser hijacker installed: new browser tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar - redirect to fxsmash.xyz search engine.
Fake web searchers rarely can generate search results, so they tend to redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Yahoo, Bing, and other legitimate search engines. This applies to fxsmash.xyz as well; however, where it redirects to - depends on users' IP addresses/ geolocations.
At the time of research, fxsmash.xyz has been observed redirecting either to Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) or to websearches.club. The latter is an illegitimate search engine, though it can provide search results, which are inaccurate and may promote untrustworthy/malicious sites.
Furthermore, browser hijackers can undo any changes users try to make to their browsers. They may also be able to restrict or deny access to the browser settings.
Therefore, recovering a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it. What is more, Set colors has data tracking abilities, which is common for browser hijackers.
Targeted information includes: browsing and search engine histories (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.), IP addresses/ geolocations, personally identifiable details, and so forth. To summarize, the presence of data-tracking software on devices - can result in severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.
It is crucial to eliminate all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

Food Tab, MovieSearchZilla, Music Search for Chrome - are a few examples of browser hijackers. They appear ordinary and useful.
This software typically offers a wide variety of functionalities. However, the promised features are usually nonoperational. This is true of nearly all PUAs. Functionality and user safety are irrelevant as the only goal of unwanted apps is to generate profit for the developers.
Therefore, instead of delivering on any promises, PUAs can hijack browsers, force-open untrustworthy and dangerous websites, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and gather vulnerable data.
How did Set colors install on my computer?
Some PUAs (e.g., Set colors) have "official" promotional/download pages. These applications are also distributed via download/installation setups of other products.
This false marketing technique of packing regular programs with unwanted or malicious additions - is termed "bundling". By rushing through download/installation processes (e.g., by skipping steps and sections, using "Easy/Express" settings, etc.) - users risk inadvertently allowing bundled content into the systems.
Intrusive advertisements are used to spread PUAs as well. Once clicked on, the ads can execute scripts to download/install this software without user consent.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is recommended to research software prior to download/installation and/or purchase. Additionally, all downloads must be done from official and verified sources.
Untrustworthy download channels, e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - often offer harmful and bundled content. When downloading/installing, it is advised to read terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out from additional apps, tools, functions, and so on.
Intrusive advertisements appear legitimate and innocuous; however, they redirect to various questionable and unreliable sites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.). Should users experience adverts and/or redirects of this kind, they must check their devices and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected.
If your computer is already infected with Set colors, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
