How to uninstall Food Tab browser hijacker?
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Food Tab?
A browser hijacker is a type of application that changes browser's settings to persuade users into visiting a specific (usually, into using a fake search engine). Food Tab is designed to promote the foodtab.club address.
It is common that apps of this type are distributed using deceptive techniques. Therefore, users often download and install them unintentionally.
Apps that get downloaded or installed inadvertently are called potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). Another detail about browser hijackers is that they often are designed to collect information related to browsing habits and (or) other data.
Usually, browser hijackers are designed to change settings such as the address of a default search engine, homepage, new tab. Food Tab replaces those addresses with the foodtab.club address - a fake search engine designed to show results generated by Bing (bing.com).
Therefore, foodtab.club gets opened when users open a new window, new tab, or enter search queries into the browser's URL bar. The foodtab.club address cannot be removed from browser' settings unless the Food Tab browser hijacker is no longer installed on a browser.
It is worthwhile to mention that fake search engines can generate misleading results (e.g., promote download pages for unwanted software, various scams). Another reason not to trust apps like Food Tab is that they can be designed to collect various browsing-related and other data.
It is common for browser hijackers to be designed to gather IP addresses, entered search queries, URLs of visited websites, geolocations, and other details related to browsing activities. Some browser hijackers can access personal details as well.
For example, passwords, credit card details. Typically, apps of his type collect data to generate revenue for their developers so they could use it for marketing purposes, sell to third parties (potentially cybercriminals), or monetize it in other ways.
Therefore, a browser hijacker can be the culprit of issues related to online privacy, browsing safety, identity theft, or other problems.

More examples of potentially unwanted applications that are categorized as browser hijackers are MovieSearchZilla, Music Search for Chrome, and Img Preview. Quite often, they are advertised as legitimate, useful applications that are supposed to have some features or improve browsing experience in some another way.
However, most of them are not only useless but also can cause certain problems. In one way or another, no browser hijacker should be trusted (installed on a browser or the operating system).
How did Food Tab install on my computer?
It is common that users download or install potentially unwanted apps together with other programs (when PUAs are distributed by bundling them together with other programs). In such cases, downloaders or installers have certain settings that can be used to decline unwanted offers.
Usually, it can be done by unticking ticked checkboxes or through "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings that those downloaders, installers have. If users leave those checkboxes ticked or settings unchanged when they download or install programs, they agree to download or install included apps as well.
Also, unwanted downloads or installation can be caused by clicking deceptive advertisements that are designed to execute certain scripts. It is worthwhile to mention that most of those ads appear on untrustworthy websites.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is highly advisable to download programs, files from official websites (and via direct links). Files downloaded via third-party downloaders, Peer-to-Peer networks (like torrent clients, eMule), unofficial pages, etc., can be used to distribute PUAs, or even malicious apps.
Third-party installers can cause unwanted installations too. Furthermore, downloaders and installers with settings like "Custom", "Advanced" (or other settings), or ticked checkboxes are likely to be bundled with potentially unwanted applications.
Therefore, those downloaders, installers should be checked for unwanted offers before finishing downlaods, installations. Additionally, it is recommended not to click ads that appear on sites related to gambling, pornography, adult dating, etc.
It is common for those ads to be designed to open potentially malicious pages or cause unwanted downloads or even installations. Unwanted, suspicious add-on, plug-in, or extension installed on a browser and programs of this kind installed on the operating system should be removed.
