How to uninstall the PC CURE PRO potentially unwanted application

Also Known As: PC CURE PRO potentially unwanted application
Damage level: Medium

What is PC CURE PRO?

PC CURE PRO is an untrusted application, promoted as an operating system optimization tool. It is supposedly capable of resolving Windows Registry issues and removing various errors.

Due to the dubious techniques used to proliferate this app, it is categorized as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA). Software within this category may seem legitimate, yet it is usually nonoperational.

Furthermore, PUAs often have undisclosed, dangerous capabilities.

PC CURE PRO unwanted application

Dubious distribution methods may be used to promote legitimate products, but they are more commonly employed to proliferate bogus and even malicious software. PUAs typically seem normal and "useful", however, these apps rarely work as advertised, and, in most cases, they are non-functional.

Fake anti-viruses are prime examples of this type of PUA. This software requires activation (i.e., purchase) to perform the features, yet following activation, they remain nonoperational.

As mentioned, PUAs can have harmful functions, which are deployed in different combinations. Some unwanted applications can force-open untrusted, misleading, deceptive/scam, and malicious sites. Adware-types run intrusive advertisement campaigns (i.e., deliver various ads). The delivered ads diminish the browsing experience and are dangerous. Once clicked, the advertisements redirect to dubious/malicious web pages, and some can stealthily download/install software (e.g., PUAs).

Browser hijackers are other PUAs that operate by making changes to browser settings and restricting/denying access to them in order to promote fake search engines. The promoted web searchers seldom provide valid search results, and so they redirect to Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other legitimate search engines.

Most PUAs (regardless of type) have data tracking capabilities. Information of interest includes browsing and search engine histories, IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, geolocations, and personally identifiable details. PUA developers monetize the collected data by sharing it with and/or selling it to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).#

In summary, the presence of unwanted apps on devices can result in system infections, serious privacy issues, financial loss, and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user privacy, all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed immediately upon detection.

PC Optimizer ProPC Accelerate, and Registry Medic are some examples of unwanted applications similar to PC CURE PRO. PUAs entice users into download/installation and/or purchase with a broad range of "useful" features.

The promised functionalities range from system cleaning/optimization to specific online content easy access tools. Despite how good the functions may sound, they usually do not work. This software's sole purpose is to generate profit for the developers.

Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs cause redirects, run intrusive ad campaigns, hijack browsers, and collect sensitive and private information.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Some PUAs (e.g., PC CURE PRO) have "official" promotional/download sites. These applications can also be downloaded/installed together with other programs. This false marketing tactic of pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".

By rushing through download/installation of software (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Quick/Express" settings, etc.) many users risk unintentionally allowing bundled content into their devices. Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well. When clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without users' permission.

Some PUAs have "official" download web pages from which they can be downloaded.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.

When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on.

Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others). If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately.

Installed programs must be activated and updated with tools or implemented functions that are provided by the official developers. No other third party, unofficial tools should be used.

Note that it is illegal to activate licensed software with ‘cracking’ tools. Files and programs should be downloaded from official websites and via direct download links. Avoid third party installers and the tools/sources mentioned above.

Do not open website links or files in irrelevant emails that are received from unknown, suspicious addresses. These bogus emails are often disguised as official and important. Regularly, scan your computer with reputable, up-to-date antivirus or anti-spyware software.

If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
