How to remove apps that promote search.validexplorer.com
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is search.validexplorer.com?
search.validexplorer.com is the address of a fake search engine. Typically, these URLs appear in browser settings after installation of a browser hijacker. Users often download and install browser hijackers unintentionally and, for this reason, they are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
Note that these apps often promote a fake search engine and collect browsing (and other) data. Note that the app that promotes search.validexplorer.com also adds the "Managed by your organization" feature to Chrome browsers.
Browser hijackers modify settings such as the homepage, default search engine, and new tab. Therefore, they open a specific address when users open a browser, new tab, or enter search queries into the URL bar.
Commonly, users cannot undo changes that were made by browser hijackers without having to uninstall them first. Therefore, search.validexplorer.com can be removed from settings only when the app that promotes it is no longer installed.
Note that search.validexplorer.com is a fake search engine because it redirects users to search.yahoo.com and simply displays results generated by Yahoo.
These apps also gather browsing data (e.g., IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited sites, and geolocations). They might also gather sensitive, personal details. The developers misuse the data to generate revenue by selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or in other ways.
Therefore, users might become victims of identity theft, and experience issues relating to online privacy, web browsing safety, etc.

flip-search.com, search.basicgeneration.com, and search.validplatform.com are some examples of other fake search engines. They usually provide results generated by legitimate search engines (such as Google, Yahoo, Bing), however, they might also generate those that include links to bogus websites.
Never use these fake search engines or the apps that promote them.
How did search.validexplorer.com install on my computer?
Users sometimes inadvertently download and install unwanted apps via deceptive advertisements - they click ads that cause unwanted download/installations by executing certain scripts.
Unwanted downloads and installations also occur during download/installation of other programs. I.e., when PUAs are included into the set-ups as 'extra offers'. This PUA distribution method of PUAs is called "bundling".
Typically, offers to download and install these additional apps can be declined via "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings, or by unticking certain checkboxes within the set-ups. When users download and install programs without making these checks and changes, they often allow PUAs to infiltrate.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to download files and programs from official websites and via direct download links. Other tools and sources such as third party downloaders and installers, unofficial pages, and Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., eMule, torrent clients) should not be used to download or install software.
Check all "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings (or available checkboxes) for offers to download and/or install unwanted apps. Do not click ads on dubious websites, since they can be designed to open bogus web pages or cause unwanted downloads and installations.
Remove any unwanted, suspicious extensions, plug-ins and add-ons installed on the browser, and software of this kind from the operating system.
If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
