How to uninstall InitialMachine adware from your operating system
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is InitialMachine?
InitialMachine is an adware-type application with browser hijacker characteristics. Following successful infiltration, this app delivers intrusive advertisement campaigns and makes modifications to browser settings to promote fake search engines.
Additionally, adware-type apps and browser hijackers typically have data tracking capabilities, which are used to collect browsing-related information. Due to the dubious methods used to proliferate InitialMachine, it is also categorized as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Adware enables the placement of banners, pop-ups, coupons, surveys, full-page and other intrusive ads, usually, on any visited website. The delivered ads overlay web page content and reduce browsing speed, thereby significantly affecting the browsing experience.
In addition, once clicked, intrusive advertisements redirect to dubious/malicious sites and some can even stealthily download/install software (e.g. PUAs). Browser hijackers assign the addresses of fake search engines as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs.
With this software installed, each new browser tab/window opened and search made via the URL bar redirects to the promoted address. Rogue search engines are rarely able to provide search results, and so they tend to redirect (or cause redirection chains leading) to Yahoo, Bing, Google and other genuine sites.
Furthermore, browser hijackers can reset any changes users attempt to make to their browsers and restrict/deny access to the browser settings outright. Therefore, recovering a hijacked browser is impossible without eliminating the software affecting it.
As mentioned, most PUAs (regardless of type) can track data. They can record browsing activity (URLs visited, web pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect personal information derived from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details).
To summarize, the presence of unwanted apps in devices can lead to system infections, financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed without delay.

ChannelSystem, CoordinatorData and PublicFraction are some examples of other adware-type apps. They may seem normal and harmless, and users are lured into download/installation with offers of various "useful" features, however, despite how good the functions may sound, they are rarely operational. In fact, this is true of most PUAs.
This unwanted software has just one purpose: to generate revenue for the developers. PUAs are designed to run intrusive advert campaigns, modify browsers, cause redirects and collect vulnerable data.
How did InitialMachine install on my computer?
PUAs are often downloaded/installed together with other products. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".
By rushing through download/installation of software (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Quick/Express" settings, etc.) many users risk unintentionally allowing bundled content into their devices.
Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well. When clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without users' permission. Some PUAs have "official" download web pages from which they can be downloaded.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others).
If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately.
If your computer is already infected with InitialMachine, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
