How to remove the IMovieSearch browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is IMovieSearch?
IMovieSearch promotes imoviesearch.com, the address of a fake search engine. Like most apps of this type, it achieves this by changing certain browser settings. IMovieSearch also collects browsing data. Note that browser hijackers are classified as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs), since most users download and install them inadvertently.
IMovieSearch promotes imoviesearch.com by assigning it as the address of the default search engine, homepage, and new tab URL. In this way, the browser hijacker ensures that users are forced to visit imoviesearch.com when they open a browser, new tab, or enter search queries into the URL bar.
Note that imoviesearch.com is a fake search engine because it does not generate any unique results - it simply redirects users to search.yahoo.com and displays results generated by Yahoo.
Generally, users can only remove the fake search engine from browser settings when the browser hijacker is no longer installed (these apps keep their settings unmodifiable as long as they are installed). This is not the only reason to avoid having browser hijackers (including IMovieSearch) installed on browsers and computers.
These rogue apps often collect browsing-related information (e.g., entered search queries, IP addresses, geolocations, addresses of visited pages) and even private, sensitive data. The details can be misused by the developers to generate revenue.
For example, they sell them to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). Browser hijacking PUAs can thus cause issues relating to browsing safety, online privacy, and even identity theft.

Damage | Internet browser tracking (potential privacy issues), display of unwanted ads, redirects to dubious websites. |
Malware Removal (Windows) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
Some more examples of browser hijackers include Pro Search, DirectStreamSearch and Stop Notifications. Typically, they are useless to regular users and do not include any features, improve the browsing experience, etc.
Most are designed only to promote fake search engines and gather information, which can lead to serious problems. As mentioned, in most cases, users download and install browser hijackers unintentionally.
How did IMovieSearch install on my computer?
Unwanted downloads and installations often occur when developers distribute PUAs by integrating them into the download/installation setups of other programs as "extra offers". This distribution method is known as "bundling". The offers can be declined in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of the setups (or by unticking certain checkboxes).
Many users fail to check and change these settings (or untick the checkboxes), thereby allowing PUAs to infiltrate together with the desired software. PUAs are also downloaded and installed by clicking deceptive advertisements (usually on untrusted sites) that execute certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others).
If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately. If your computer is already infected with IMovieSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
