How to remove the DirectStreamSearch browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is DirectStreamSearch?
Like most browser hijackers, after installation DirectStreamSearch changes certain browser settings to the address of a fake search engine. In this case, it assigns them to directstreamsearch.com. It is very likely that DirectStreamSearch will also collect information relating to users' browsing activities.
Typically, users download and install browser hijackers inadvertently and, for this reason, they are classified as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
DirectStreamSearch is designed to change the address of the default search engine, homepage, and new tab to directstreamsearch.com. Therefore, when this app is installed on the browser, directstreamsearch.com is opened when a browser or new tab is opened, or when a search query is entered into the URL bar.
directstreamsearch.com is a fake search engine because it provides results generated by Yahoo - it simply redirects users to search.yahoo.com. I.e., directstreamsearch.com does not generate any unique results. Note that users can remove fake search engines from browser settings only when the apps that promote them (browser hijackers) are no longer installed.
These apps also track and record information relating to users' browsing habits. For example, geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited websites, IP addresses and other data. In some cases, they gather sensitive details as well. The data could be sold to third parties (potentially some cyber criminals) or misused to generate revenue in some other ways.
This can lead to problems relating to online privacy, browsing safety, and some users might even become victims of identity theft.

More examples of apps that are classified as browser hijackers include Stop Notifications, ConverterSearchPlus and Mytab App. Typically, they are designed only to generate revenue for the developers and are useless to regular users, even when they are advertised as useful, legitimate applications. All PUAs should be removed from browsers and computers immediately.
How did DirectStreamSearch install on my computer?
Unwanted downloads and installations often occur when developers distribute PUAs by integrating them into the download/installation setups of other programs as "extra offers". This distribution method is known as "bundling". The offers can be declined in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of the setups (or by unticking certain checkboxes).
Many users fail to check and change these settings (or untick the checkboxes), thereby allowing PUAs to infiltrate together with the desired software. PUAs are also downloaded and installed by clicking deceptive advertisements (usually on untrusted sites) that execute certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Download software and files from official websites and via direct links. It is not safe to use torrent clients, eMule (or other Peer-to-Peer networks), third party downloaders, unofficial websites or other sources of this kind. Avoid third party installers. Check "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings, and decline offers to download or install unwanted software.
Do not click ads that are displayed on dubious websites, since they can open other untrusted websites or even cause unwanted downloads and installations. Remove any unwanted, suspicious applications (extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins) that are installed on the browser.
The same should be applied to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with DirectStreamSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
