Avoid visiting/using dropapk.to - a dubious file hosting/sharing site
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is dropapk[.]to site?
dropapk[.]to is an untrusted file hosting and sharing website. It uses rogue advertising networks as a monetization technique. Therefore, when visitors directly or indirectly interact with the web page, they are redirected to various dubious and possibly malicious sites.
This poses a significant threat to device and user safety, and due to this, you are strongly advised against visiting or using dropapk[.]to.
Web pages that use rogue advertising networks redirect to and/or force-open various sale-based/promotional, untrusted, deceptive, scam, compromised and malicious websites. These redirects can occur the moment such a site is opened and/or when the content presented within it (e.g. advertisements, buttons, etc.) is clicked.
Furthermore, these web pages often host intrusive ads (e.g. pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys, etc.), which redirect to likewise dangerous websites and some can even stealthily download/install software. Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) are a prime example of software infiltrated into systems in this manner.
These unwanted apps can have different dangerous capabilities and these functions can be in varied combinations. PUAs can force-open untrusted and malicious web pages. Adware-types enable the placement of intrusive ads, typically on any visited website.
Browser hijacker-type PUAs make modifications to browser settings and restrict/deny access to them to promote fake search engines. The promoted web search engines are usually unable to provide unique results, and so they tend to redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Yahoo, Bing and other legitimate search engines.
In addition, most PUAs (regardless of type) can track data. They monitor browsing activity (visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, etc.) and gather personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). This sensitive data is likely to contain personally identifiable information.
Furthermore, the collected information is shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). In summary, the presence of unwanted software on devices can result in system infections, serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft.
Therefore, to ensure device integrity and user privacy, you are advised to remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

Using rogue advertising networks is a common monetization method and thus there are thousands of websites akin to dropapk[.]to on the web - dailyuploads.net, pcgamestorrents.com, cpmlink.net, and ytbmp3.club are just some examples.
Due to the relative prevalence of dubious sites that use rogue advertising networks and which are promoted through them, you are strongly advised to exercise caution when browsing.
How did adware install on my computer?
PUAs are often downloaded/installed together with other products. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".
By rushing through download/installation of software (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Quick/Express" settings, etc.) many users risk unintentionally allowing bundled content into their devices. Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well.
When clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without users' permission. Some PUAs have "official" download web pages from which they can be downloaded.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others).
If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
