How to remove apps that open pro-web.net and similar web pages
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is pro-web[.]net?
pro-web[.]net is one of many untrusted web pages that open other websites of this kind or load dubious content. It is similar to xrclicks[.]xyz, cachenews[.]biz, lastmedias[.]biz and many others. These sites are often opened by web browsers that have potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) installed. I.e., users do not visit them intentionally.
Note that PUAs can also gather browsing-related information and serve advertisements.
PUAs open pro-web[.]net and similar sites in a new window or tab. When visited, they load dubious content or open about two or three other untrusted pages. What happens next depends on the geolocations of their visitors. At the time of research, pro-web[.]net opened a scam website claiming that Norton subscription has expired.
Note that pro-web[.]net also uses a 'clickbait' technique to deceive visitors into allowing it to show notifications: it displays a notification stating that visitors must prove that they are not robots and click the "Allow" button. Typically, such pages display notifications that contain deceptive advertisements, links to various untrusted pages, etc.
Therefore, never allow pro-web[.]net or other similar pages to show notifications. Furthermore, PUAs can serve various coupons, surveys, banners, pop-ups and other types of ads. When clicked, these can open various untrusted pages or even run scripts designed to cause download/installation of unwanted applications.
Furthermore, PUAs can function as information tracking tools - they often collect browsing data such as IP addresses, geolocations, addresses of visited pages, entered search queries, and other browsing-related information. In some cases, PUAs target private, sensitive details as well.
Furthermore, the developers can sell the information to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or misuse it to generate revenue in other ways. Therefore, users are exposed to risk of problems relating to privacy and browsing safety, and some might even become victims of identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall all PUAs immediately.

To summarize, PUAs generate revenue for the developers by collecting information, serving intrusive advertisements and promoting dubious websites. Most do not have any useful features and simply cause problems. Users often download and install PUAs inadvertently.
How did adware install on my computer?
Developers often distribute unwanted apps by including them into the set-ups of other software. This distribution method is called "bundling". Typically, information about additionally-included apps is not properly disclosed. Offers to download or install PUAs can usually be declined in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings. Many users fail to check and change these settings, thereby agreeing by default with offers to download and install included apps. Unintentional download/install of PUAs also occurs by clicking deceptive ads that execute certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
It is important to download software and files from official websites and using direct download links. Third party downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks (torrent clients, eMule), unofficial websites, etc., should not be used to download or install any programs - this can lead to download/installation of PUAs and rogue software.
Check all "Advanced" and "Custom" settings and decline offers to download or install PUAs. Do not click intrusive ads that appear on dubious websites, since they can open other untrusted websites or even cause unwanted downloads and installations.
Remove any suspicious, unwanted extensions, plug-ins and add-ons installed on the browser, and software of this kind installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?
Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.
Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
