How to remove the FunSearchToday browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is FunSearchToday?
FunSearchToday is rogue software classified as a browser hijacker. It operates by making alterations to browser settings to promote funsearchtoday.com (a fake search engine). Furthermore, most browser hijackers monitor users' browsing activity, and it is highly likely that this is the case with FunSearchToday.
Due the dubious methods used to proliferate this browser hijacker, it is also classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and other browsers with large user bases are typical targets of browser hijackers. They assign the addresses of fake search engines (including funsearchtoday.com) as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs.
These modifications may seem minor, however, they significantly affect the browsing experience. To elaborate, with FunSearchToday installed, each new browser tab/window opened and web search made via the URL bar redirects to funsearchtoday.com.
Rogue search engines are seldom able to generate unique results, and so they typically redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Yahoo, Bing and other genuine sites. The funsearchtoday.com web searcher is no exception to this, and simply redirects to the Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) search engine.
Browser hijackers can deny access to the browser settings and/or undo any permitted changes made. Therefore, recovering a hijacked browser is impossible without eliminating the software affecting it. As mentioned, most browser hijackers have data tracking capabilities.
They can record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect vulnerable data extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). This sensitive data usually contains personally identifiable information that developers monetize by sharing it with and/or selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
To summarize, the presence of data-tracking content on browsers/systems can result in serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

StreamLim, Ultra Tab and Foxy Newtab are some examples of other browser hijackers. They may seem legitimate and often entice users into download/installation with offers of various "useful" functionality, however, the features promised usually do no work and, even if they do, it is not as advertised.
In fact, this is true of all PUAs. The sole purpose of this unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs can hijack browsers, force-open dubious or malicious sites, run intrusive ad campaigns and collect private data.
How did FunSearchToday install on my computer?
PUAs are distributed via the download/installation set-ups of other programs. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular set-ups with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".
Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled into the system. Some PUAs have "official" download web pages. Intrusive ads proliferate these applications as well. Once clicked, the ads can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation and/or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources. Untrusted channels such as unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders commonly offer deceptive and bundled content.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive advertisements usually seem normal, however, they can redirect to dubious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on).
If you encounter ads and/or redirects of this kind, inspect your devices and immediately remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with FunSearchToday, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
