How to remove the Foxy Newtab application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Foxy Newtab?
Foxy Newtab hijacks browsers by changing certain settings (such as the address of a fake search engine) to tryfoxy.com and collects browsing-related information. Commonly, users download and install browser hijackers inadvertently and, therefore, they are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
Typically, browser hijackers promote fake search engines by assigning their URLs as the address of the homepage, default search engine and new tab. Therefore, people are forced to visit a certain address when they open a browser, enter search queries into the URL bar, and open new tabs.
Foxy Newtab changes the aforementioned addresses to tryfoxy.com. This is a fake search engine, since it does not generate unique results - it simply redirects users to google.com (displays results generated by Google). In most cases, users are forced to visit these bogus addresses as long as the browser hijacker is installed on the browser and/or operating system.
Therefore, tryfoxy.com can only be removed from the settings and stopped from being opened when Foxy Newtab is no longer installed. As mentioned, Foxy Newtab is capable of collecting browsing data. Typically, apps of this type target IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, geolocations, etc.
In some cases, they target sensitive information. The developers sell the data to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or misuse it to generate revenue in other ways. Therefore, users might become victims of identity theft, and experience issues relating to browsing safety and online privacy, and other problems.
In any case, browser hijackers should never be used or installed. If Foxy Newtab or other apps of this type are already installed on the browser and/or computer, uninstall them immediately.

How did Foxy Newtab install on my computer?
Generally, users download and install potentially unwanted applications through the downloaders and installers of other software. More precisely, when PUAs are included as 'additional offers'. These offers can usually be declined via "Advanced", "Custom", "Manual" or other settings of the set-ups.
Unwanted downloads and installations are often caused when users fail to check and change these settings. In other cases, they click deceptive advertisements that are capable of executing certain scripts designed to download and install unwanted software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to download programs and files from official websites and via direct links. Other sources, tools such as third party downloaders and installers, torrent clients, eMule (and other Peer-to-Peer networks), unofficial pages are used to promote unwanted apps.
Check all "Advanced", "Custom" and other similar settings of the download and installation setups, and decline offers to download or install additionally-included (unwanted) apps. Do not click deceptive ads that appear on untrusted websites, since they can open other pages of this type or cause download/installation of unwanted applications.
Remove any unknown, unwanted and suspicious extensions, plug-ins and add-ons installed on the browser. The same applies to software of this kind that is installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with Foxy Newtab, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
