How to remove redirects to and from gdanstum.net
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is gdanstum[.]net?
gdanstum[.]net is a bogus website designed to present visitors with dubious content and/or redirect them to other untrusted or possibly malicious web pages. The gdanstum[.]net site shares many similarities with vviewpoint.biz, pushwinning.com, admnsrv.com and thousands of others.
Few users access gdanstum[.]net intentionally - most are redirected to it by intrusive ads or Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) already infiltrated into the system. These apps do not need express permission to be installed onto devices. PUAs cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns and track browsing-related information.
The behavior of gdanstum[.]net is determined by visitors' geolocations. It learns this information by checking their IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. Therefore, whether users are presented with dubious material and/or are redirected elsewhere depends on their geolocations.
Additionally, gdanstum[.]net employs browser notifications. Should these be enabled, gdanstum[.]net starts delivering intrusive ad campaigns. As well as being a nuisance, these ads pose a threat to device/user safety. Once clicked, they can redirect to dubious and malicious websites.
Furthermore, some can even be triggered (when clicked) to execute scripts designed to download/install rogue software without users' consent. This is one of the methods used to proliferate PUAs. These unwanted applications can have dangerous capabilities in varied combinations.
As mentioned, PUAs can force-open untrusted or dangerous sites (including gdanstum[.]net) and can also run intrusive advertisement campaigns. Most PUAs (regardless of type) have data tracking capabilities.
They can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather sensitive information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data is likely to contain personally identifiable information that developers share with and/or sell to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
To summarize, the presence of these unwanted apps on devices can lead to system infections, financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft. Therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

PUAs may seem legitimate and innocuous. They also offer a wide variety of "useful" functionality, however, the features rarely work as advertised and, in most cases, do not work at all. The only purpose of this unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers.
Regular users receive no real value and can instead experience serious problems. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs force-open untrusted and malicious websites, run intrusive ad campaigns and collect private data.
How did adware install on my computer?
PUAs are often downloaded/installed with other products. This deceptive marketing method of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling". Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system.
Some of these applications have "official" promotional pages from which they can be downloaded. Once clicked, intrusive ads can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software prior to download/installation and/or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources. Untrusted download channels such as unofficial and free file-hosting sites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders commonly offer deceptive and bundled content.
Download and installation processes must be treated with caution. Read the terms, studying all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features, and other additions. It is also important to exercise caution when browsing.
Intrusive advertisements may seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious websites (e.g. gambling, adult-dating, pornography, and so on). If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, check the system and remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately.
If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?
Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.
Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
