How to remove the Now News Online unwanted app
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Now News Online?
Now News Online is a typical browser hijacker which promotes the address of a fake search engine (hnownewsonline.com) by changing certain browser settings.
Apps of this type often gather information relating to browsing activity. Note that users often download and install apps such as Now News Online inadvertently and are therefore categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). Research shows that Now News Online is distributed with another PUA called Hide My History.
After installation, browser hijackers change the address of the default search engine, homepage, and new tab so that users are forced to visit a specific address when they open a browser, new tab, or enter search queries into the URL bar.
Now News Online changes these settings to hnownewsonline.com (and/or search.hnownewsonline.com, hp.hnownewsonline.com), the address of a fake search engine. The site is classified as fake, since people are redirected to search.yahoo.com when they use it to search.
Therefore, this fake search engine displays results generated by Yahoo (a legitimate search engine) rather than any unique results. Users cannot undo the changes made by Now News Online, unless the app is uninstalled.
Therefore, hnownewsonline.com (and search.hnownewsonline.com, hp.hnownewsonline.com) can be removed from browser settings only when Now News Online is uninstalled. Additionally, browser hijackers can collect information such as geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited websites, IP addresses and other browsing data.
In some cases, they can access and record personal details as well. In such cases, developers can sell the gathered data to third parties (who could be cyber criminals) or misuse it to generate revenue in other ways.
If you have a browser hijacked by an app such as Now News Online, you could experience issues relating to online privacy, web browsing safety or even become victims of identity theft.

There are many apps that are categorized as browser hijackers including, for example, MyNewsFree, Easy Print Recipes and MusicStreamSearch. They supposedly include various features, improve the browsing experience, and are useful in other ways, however, they are useless and can cause serious problems.
Browser hijackers are designed only to help the developers to generate revenue.
How did Now News Online install on my computer?
Users often download and install browser hijackers (or other PUAs) inadvertently through the set-ups of other programs. PUAs are listed in settings such as "Custom" and "Advanced". Unfortunately, many users fail to check and change these settings, thereby allowing additionally-included PUAs to infiltrate with regular software.
This rogue software distribution method is known as "bundling". Additionally, unwanted downloads and installations can be caused by clicking deceptive advertisements, some of which can execute certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Check all "Custom", "Advanced and other similar settings of the setup and decline offers to download or install unwanted apps. Software and files should be downloaded only from official websites and via direct download links. Do not use third party software downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks such as eMule, torrent clients and so on.
Do not click advertisements that appear on dubious pages, since these can redirect to other dubious websites or even cause download/installation of unwanted, potentially malicious software. Remove any unwanted, suspicious apps (extensions, add-ons, plug-ins) installed on the browser immediately.
The same should be applied to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with Now News Online, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
