How to remove Speed Test Guide and redirects to speedtest-guide.com
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Speed Test Guide?
Speed Test Guide is a browser hijacker and endorsed as a free tool capable of internet speed testing, access to previous tests and speed improvement tips, etc. In fact, Speed Test Guide operates by altering browser settings to promote a fake search engine (speedtest-guide.com).
Furthermore, it has data tracking capabilities, which are employed to monitor users' browsing habits. Due to its dubious proliferation methods, Speed Test Guide is also classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and other popular browsers with large users bases are common targets of browser hijackers. They affect browsers by assigning the addresses of their fake search engines as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs.
Speed Test Guide promotes speedtest-guide.com in this manner. Therefore, with the hijacker installed, each new browser tab/window opened and each search query typed into the URL bar redirects to speedtest-guide.com. Rogue search engines are rarely able to provide unique results, and speedtest-guide.com is no exception.
Typically, these fakes search engines redirect (or cause redirection chains leading) to legitimate sites. In this case, Speed Test Guide's search engine (speedtest-guide.com) redirects to search.yahoo.com. These modifications may seem relatively easy to undo, however, any changes users attempt to make are automatically reset (if access to the browser settings is allowed at all).
Therefore, the hijacker software must be eliminated to recover the affected browser. Speed Test Guide also has data tracking capabilities. It monitors users' browsing habits (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collects their personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and other details).
This data might even contain personally identifiable information. The data is often shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) intent on misusing it for profit.
To summarize, the presence of data tracking content on systems can lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss and identity theft. To protect device integrity and user safety, remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.

Browser hijackers often seem legitimate and tempt users into download/installation with offers of "useful" features. World Events Today, Search By OpenFile, Private Tab are some examples of such software, however, the advertised functions are seldom operational and, in most cases, do not work at all.
In fact, this applies to most PUAs. The only purpose of these unwanted apps is to generate revenue for the developers, whilst regular users receive no value. PUAs modify browsers and promote fake search engines, force-open untrusted and malicious websites, run intrusive advertisement campaigns and track private data.
How did Speed Test Guide install on my computer?
PUAs proliferate via the download/installation set-ups of other products. This deceptive marketing tactic of pre-packing regular programs with unwanted or malicious software is called "bundling". Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content onto the system.
Certain PUAs (including Speed Test Guide) have "official" promotional web pages from which they can be downloaded. Once clicked, intrusive ads can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' permission.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software and download it only from official and verified download channels. Untrustworthy download sources (e.g. free file-hosting sites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders) can offer deceptive or bundled content.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" options and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features and other supplementary software. Intrusive advertisements often seem legitimate and normal, however, they can redirect to dubious web pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating and so on).
If you experience these ads/redirects, you are strongly advised to check the systems and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with Speed Test Guide, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
