Coloring Hero Adware (Mac)
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Coloring Hero?
Coloring Hero is promoted as an app for MacOS operating systems that provides coloring pages. It is presented as a legitimate and useful application, however, Coloring Hero is classified as an adware-type potentially unwanted app (PUA).
These apps usually feed users with various online advertisements and collect information relating to users' browsing activity. Most users install Coloring Hero unintentionally.
When installed, Coloring Hero feeds users with intrusive ads such as coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups, etc. Being forced to view these ads is annoying and, furthermore, they conceal underlying content of visited websites. This is achieved by employing tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site.
Furthermore, ads of this type often cause unwanted redirects. If clicked, they open dubious (potentially, malicious) websites. Intrusive ads also run scripts that download/install other unwanted apps. Therefore, they increase the risk of computer infection with malicious programs.
PUAs also collect user-system information such as IP addresses, geo-locations, search queries, URLs of visited websites, and other details relating to users' browsing habits. Some information might include personal/sensitive data. Developers share the information with third parties (potentially cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue.
These actions can lead to privacy/browsing safety issues and some users might have their identities stolen.
Name | Ads by Coloring Hero |
Threat Type | Mac malware, Mac virus |
Symptoms | Your Mac became slower than normal, you see unwanted pop-up ads, you get redirected to shady websites. |
Distribution methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, free software installers (bundling), fake flash player installers, torrent file downloads. |
Damage | Internet browsing tracking (potential privacy issues), displaying of unwanted ads, redirects to shady websites, loss of private information. |
Malware Removal (Mac) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your Mac with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
Coloring Hero is similar to Convixio, VixPlayer, Colorian, and many other adware-type PUAs. These are usually promoted as legitimate software, however, by offering various features and tools, developers attempt to trick people into downloading and using their rogue apps.
Unfortunately, most PUAs do not provide any of the functions promised. On the contrary, they cause problems and are designed only to generate revenue for their developers.
How did Coloring Hero install on my computer?
In some cases, potentially unwanted apps can be downloaded from their official websites. In this case, there is a website used to promote Coloring Hero and from which this app can be downloaded. Note, however, that users often install these apps inadvertently through clicked deceptive ads or when software developers employ the "bundling" method.
They use this method to trick users into installing unwanted applications together with other chosen software. Developers hide PUAs in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar sections of the download or installation set-ups. Information regarding possible unwanted installations/downloads is not properly disclosed.
Despite this, such installations usually occur only when users leave settings unchanged and rush the download/installation procedures.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent installation of unwanted apps, download and install software with care. When downloading, use only official, trustworthy sources and direct links. Avoid using third party downloaders such as torrents and so on. Check "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings when installing software, especially if it is freeware.
Deselect offers to install unwanted apps and only then finish the installation process. Avoid clicking intrusive ads, especially those displayed on untrustworthy websites.
If you encounter ads that redirect you to gambling, adult dating and other untrustworthy websites, check your browser and list of installed programs and remove any unknown/unwanted entries (extensions, add-ons, plug-ins, etc).
If your computer is already infected with Coloring Hero, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
