Convixio Adware (Mac)
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Convixio?
Convixio is a deceptive application presented as a legitimate tool capable of converting video formats. This supposed functionality often tricks users into believing that Convixio is legitimate and useful. In fact, it is categorized as a potentially unwanted application (PUA) and adware.
There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) stealth installation without users' consent; 2) tracking of browsing activity, and; 3) display of intrusive advertisements.
Following infiltration, Convixio delivers pop-up, coupon, banner, and various other intrusive advertisements. To achieve this, developers employ tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, intrusive ads often conceal underlying website content, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience.
Furthermore, intrusive advertisements are likely to redirect to malicious websites and even execute scripts designed to download/install other PUAs (or even high-risk malware). Therefore, even a single accidental click can lead to high-risk computer infections. Another significant downside is information tracking, which is common behavior for adware-type apps.
In most cases, apps such as Convixio gather IP addresses, search queries, URLs visited, pages viewed, and other similar information. Gathered information often includes personal details that developers share with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
These people continue to misuse private data to generate even more revenue. This behavior can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, we strongly advise you to uninstall Convixio adware immediately.

Convixio is virtually identical to ZipMAC, VixPlayer, Colorian, and dozens of other adware-type applications. As with Convixio, these apps offer "useful features", however, these claims are attempts (often successful) to trick users into believing that the promoted apps are legitimate and useful. Note that few PUAs provide the functions promised.
Most have just one purpose: to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than giving any real value for regular users, apps such as Convixio deliver advertisements and record user-system information relating to browsing activity.
How did Convixio install on my computer?
This adware is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, it often infiltrates systems without users' consent, since developers proliferate it using "bundling" and intrusive advertising methods. "Bundling" is essentially stealth installation of third party apps with regular software. Developers are not honest enough to adequately disclose installation of unwanted apps.
They simply hide them within various sections (typically "Custom" or "Advanced" settings) of the download/installation processes. Furthermore, many users often rush these procedures and skip steps. In addition, they click various advertisements without understanding the possible consequences. This behavior often leads to inadvertent installation of third party apps.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent this situation, be very cautious when browsing the internet and downloading/installing software. Bear in mind that intrusive ads usually seem legitimate, however, once clicked, they redirect to pornography, gambling, adult dating, survey, and other dubious sites. If you experience these ads/redirects, immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins.
In addition, select "Custom/Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each window of the download/installation dialogs. Opt-out of all additionally-included applications and decline offers to download/install them. We strongly recommend that you avoid using third party download/installation tools, since most are monetized using the "bundling" method.
Software should be downloaded from official sources, preferably using direct download links. The main reasons for computer infections are poor knowledge and careless behavior - the key to safety is caution. If your computer is already infected with Convixio, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
