ZU-Coupon Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is ZU-Coupon?
According to its developers, the ZU-Coupon application allows users to find various deals, shops, ratings, and other information relating to shopping and coupons. This may seem to be a legitimate app, however, it is categorized as a potentially unwanted application (PUA) and adware.
In most cases, people install these applications unintentionally without direct user permission. Adware apps deliver ads and record information relating to browsing activity or even personal/sensitive data.
When installed, ZU-Coupon delivers intrusive ads, such as coupons, banners, surveys, and so on. These are annoying, since they are displayed via tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, they conceal underlying content of visited websites.
Furthermore, clicking them can result in redirects to untrustworthy, deceptive websites. When clicked, some of these ads might be programmed to run scripts that download/install other unwanted apps. Another downside is information tracking.
Adware-type apps often gather browsing-related data such as IP addresses, keystrokes, search queries, URLs of visited websites, and so on. Some of the data might also include personal/sensitive details. Adware developers share the collected information with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue.
Thus, having applications of this type installed can lead to computer infections and problems relating to browsing safety, privacy, or even identity theft.

ZU-Coupon is similar to many other applications of this type including, for example, ViewMyPDF, TonOfFunGames, and MyKrazyGames. Frequently, adware-type apps are promoted as 'useful' and able to provide various features, however, few provide the functionality promised or give any other value.
How did ZU-Coupon install on my computer?
In some cases, potentially unwanted apps can be downloaded from their official websites, however, users often install them inadvertently through other intrusive ads or when software developers use the "bundling" method. Bundling is a deceptive marketing method that is used to trick users into installing unwanted apps together with other software.
Developers hide these apps in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar parts of the installation set-ups. Therefore, information regarding the presence of bundled apps is not properly disclosed. Inadvertent installation of these applications usually occurs when users leave the download/installation settings unchanged.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent installation of unwanted apps, download and install software with care. When downloading software, use official, trustworthy sources and direct links only. Avoid using third party downloaders such as torrents and so on. Check "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings when installing software, especially if it is free.
Deselect offers to install unwanted apps and only then finish the installation process. Avoid clicking intrusive ads, especially those displayed on untrustworthy websites.
If you encounter ads that redirect you to gambling, adult dating, and other untrustworthy websites, check your browser and list of installed programs and remove any unknown/unwanted entries (extensions, add-ons, plug-ins, etc.). If your computer is already infected with ZU-Coupon, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this adware.
