ScreenRecorder Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is ScreenRecorder?
The ScreenRecorder application is promoted as screen recording software that allows users to record their screens and save them in different file formats.
This app may seem legitimate and useful, however, it is an adware-type app and potentially unwanted application (PUA). ScreenRecorder is often installed inadvertently, displays intrusive advertisements, and collects data.
ScreenRecorded is known as adware due to the type of ads delivered, which are mostly coupons, banners, surveys, and pop-ups. They are displayed using tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site and conceal underlying content, thus diminishing the browsing experience.
They lead to untrustworthy/potentially malicious websites and execute scripts designed to download and install other potentially unwanted applications or even malware. Clicking them can result in high-risk computer infections.
Another downside of ScreenRecorder is that it collects data (such as IP addresses, keystrokes, visited websites, search queries, geo-locations, and so on).
Some of the collected data might contain personal or sensitive information that is shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) and misused to generate revenue. This situation can lead to privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly recommend users to uninstall ScreenRecorder immediately.

There are many adware applications, all of which are similar or identical. PQwick, Media Player 1004, and CintaNotes are just some examples of other adware-type applications that share the same purpose as ScreenRecorder - to generate revenue by delivering intrusive ads and collecting data.
As a rule, these applications deliver none of the functionality promised and pose a direct threat to your privacy and web browsing safety.
How did ScreenRecorder install on my computer?
ScreenRecorder has an official download website and can be installed via third party software, however, applications of this type are more commonly installed inadvertently. Software developers use a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" to trick users into installing potentially unwanted applications.
"Bundling" is stealth installation of potentially unwanted applications together with regular software. Furthermore, many users skip installation steps and, aware of this, developers hide bundled apps in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar sections of the installation processes.
In summary, these installations are not properly disclosed and by skipping the installation steps, users allow apps such as ScreenRecorder to be installed without their knowledge. Intrusive ads can also cause these unwanted installations.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Do not skip software installation steps, especially if it is free software. Check all available "Custom", "Advanced (and other similar) options and settings of the installation processes. Deselect any unwanted offers (additional software) and only then proceed to the next step or finish the installation.
Download software using official sources and avoid using third party software downloaders/installers or torrents. Today, many intrusive ads appear legitimate, however, they often lead to suspicious/untrustworthy websites (such as pornography, adult dating, gambling, etc.).
If you are redirected to a dubious website after clicking an intrusive ad, quit the website immediately and check installed extensions/add-ons/plug-ins on your browser.
Remove unwanted/unknown extensions or other similar applications. Also check for installed suspicious programs on your computer and uninstall them. If your computer is already infected with ScreenRecorder, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this adware.
