SimplePictureEdit Toolbar

What is hp.myway.com?
SimplePictureEdit is a deceptive application developed by Mindspark Interactive Network (now known as IAC applications). By offering functionality to allow users to edit photos, SimplePictureEdit attempts to trick them into believing that this app is legitimate and useful.
In fact, this app usually infiltrates systems without permission. In addition, it stealthily modifies web browser options. Therefore, SimplePictureEdit is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and a browser hijacker.
This PUP targets Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. Following infiltration, SimplePictureEdit modifies the new tab URL, default search engine, and homepage options by assigning them to hp.myway.com.
These changes may seem insignificant, however, users are unable to revert them. SimplePictureEdit reassigns the aforementioned settings when attempts are made to change them.
Therefore, returning browsers to their previous states becomes impossible and users are encouraged to visit hp.myway.com when they open a new browser tab or simply search via the URL bar. This significantly diminishes the web browsing experience. Modification of web browser options is a common behavior to browser-hijacking apps.
In addition, many of these applications monitor users' browsing activity. It is currently unknown if SimplePictureEdit gathers information, however, most browser hijackers record IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar information that might be personally identifiable.
Developers sell this information to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who aim to generate revenue by misusing private details - this can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, we strongly advise you to uninstall all browser hijackers (including SimplePictureEdit) immediately.
Name | SimplePictureEdit browser hijacker |
Threat Type | Browser Hijacker, Redirect, Search Hijacker, Toolbar, Unwanted New Tab |
Symptoms | Manipulated Internet browser(s) settings (homepage, default Internet search engine, new tab settings). User's are forced to visit hijacker's website and search the Internet using their search engines. |
Distribution methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, free software installers (bundling), fake flash player installers. |
Damage | Internet browsing tracking (potential privacy issues), displaying of unwanted ads, redirects to shady websites. |
Malware Removal (Windows) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
SimplePictureEdit's developers have released dozens of identical browser-hijacking applications. The list of examples includes (but is not limited to) GetFreeGifs, FileSendSuite, EasyEmailSuite, and NewNoteCenter. These apps offer different functionality, but have identical behavior. In fact, all browser-hijacking applications are virtually identical.
By falsely claiming to enhance the web browsing experience, PUPs attempt to give the impression of legitimacy, however, these apps deliver no value for regular users - their only purpose is to generate revenue for the developers.
Browser-hijacking applications cause unwanted redirects (thereby promoting various websites, most of which are fake search engines) and record user-system information.
Note that fake search engines are also designed to increase developers' revenue and their behavior barely differs from PUPs - they promote other websites (by generating fake search results), deliver intrusive ads that are irrelevant to the user (via the "Pay Per Click" advertising model), and record private information.
Fake search results and intrusive ads can lead to malicious websites. Furthermore, the ads might execute scripts that download and install malware (or other PUPs). Therefore, using a fake Internet search engine is very risky.
How did SimplePictureEdit install on my computer?
SimplePictureEdit has an official promotion website, however, these apps are distributed using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling", and the aforementioned intrusive ads. Bundling is stealth installation of third party programs with regular software/apps.
Developers hide bundled apps within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Rushing these processes, skipping steps, and clicking various ads thus exposes systems to risk of various infections, compromises users' privacy, and inadvertently grants set-ups/PUPs permission to modify browser options.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The main reasons for computer infections are careless behavior and lack of knowledge. The key to computer safety is caution. Therefore, be cautious when downloading/installing software and browsing the Internet. Download your software from official sources only. We strongly advise you to select a direct download link, rather than using third party downloaders/installers.
Most of these tools bundle software and using them is very risky. During download/installation, select the "Custom/Advanced" options and opt-out of all additionally-included programs. In addition, never click ads, no matter how tempting they may seem. Cyber criminals put a great deal of time and effort into designing intrusive ads.
Therefore, determining if they originate from the visited (legitimate) website is virtually impossible. Do not take the risk of clicking them.
