WiseSoft Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is WiseSoft?
Similar to CPU Miner, WiseSoft is a rogue application that usually infiltrates systems without consent (the "bundling" method). Developers use WiseSoft to mine cryptocurrency. Therefore, this app is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
As mentioned above, criminals employ WiseSoft to mine cryptocurrency. This process drains system resources and, thus, computer performance might significantly diminish. WiseSoft's developers claim that this PUP "mines" only when the system is in idle state. Therefore, the software supposedly does not affect the user-experience.
In fact, cyber criminals should never be trusted and you are advised to uninstall WiseSoft immediately. Furthermore, most PUPs cause unwanted redirects to various malicious websites. Some generate ads that conceal underlying content, and that might also redirect to malicious sites.
Therefore, PUPs create security risks and diminish the web browsing experience. In addition, they track Internet browsing activity by gathering sensitive data. The collected data is shared with anonymous people who misuse personal details to generate revenue. As with WiseSoft, all PUPs should be uninstalled immediately.
Although most PUPs are not used to mine cryptocurrency, they share similarities with WiseSoft - all are designed to generate revenue for the developers. By offering 'useful features', programs such as History Button, Weather Inspect, Open Plugins, and many others, attempt to trick users into believing that they are legitimate and useful.
Rather than providing any significant value for regular users, PUPs cause unwanted redirects (thereby generating traffic for various websites), deliver intrusive advertisements (via the "Pay Per Click" advertising model), and collect user-system information (which is later shared with third parties to generate revenue).
How did WiseSoft install on my computer?
The WiseSoft PUP is distributed using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". Developers are aware that most users rush the download/installation processes and skip steps. Therefore, they hide bundled programs within "Custom/Advanced" settings of these processes.
Thus, skipping steps often leads to inadvertent installation of rogue applications such as WiseSoft. In addition, users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
PUPs such as WiseSoft are distributed using the "bundling" method. Therefore, never rush the download or installation processes. Select the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings, closely analyze each step, and decline offers to download/install additional programs. Never install bundled software.
