UnitConverter Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is UnitConverter?
UnitConverter is a deceptive application that claims to allow conversion of various units of measurement. On initial inspection, UnitConverter may seem legitimate and useful, however, this app often infiltrates systems without users' consent.
Furthermore, UnitConverter delivers intrusive online advertisements and continually gathers information relating to Internet browsing activity. For these reasons, UnitConverter is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
Following successful infiltration, UnitConverter employs a 'virtual layer' to generate pop-up, coupon, banner, and other similar advertisements. The virtual layer enables placement of third party graphical content on any site.
Therefore, the displayed ads often conceal underlying content of visited websites, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience. In addition, some redirect to malicious websites - even accidental clicks can result in high-risk adware or malware infections.
As well as displaying ads, UnitConverter gathers information relating to users' Internet browsing activity. Examples of collected data types include IP addresses, search queries, websites visited, and pages viewed.
The collected data might contain personally identifiable details that UnitConverter's developers share with cooperating third party companies, who often misuse personal details to generate revenue.
The presence of an information-tracking app such as UnitConverter on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly advise you to eliminate this PUP immediately.
There are hundreds of adware-type applications similar to UnitConverter including, for example, EZSearch, MarvelSound, and SavingsCool. Note that these applications offer different functionality, however, they have identical behavior. By claiming to provide so-called 'useful features', apps such as UnitConverter attempt to attempt to give the impression of legitimacy.
Adware-type programs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers - regular users receive no value. These applications collect private information and deliver intrusive online advertisements.
How did UnitConverter install on my computer?
UnitConverter has an official download website, however, developers also promote it using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling".
Therefore, many users install UnitConverter inadvertently. Bundling is stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software. Developers hide all bundled programs within the "Custom/Advanced" settings of the download or installation processes. Rushing these processes and skipping steps exposes systems to risk of various infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Infiltration of PUPs can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, analyze each step of the download/installation processes using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Secondly, decline offers to download/install additional applications. The key to computer safety is caution.
