What is Kozzoo?
Kozzoo is a deceptive application claiming to allow users to play various Flash arcade games. It is identical to Froovr, GamesCake, GamesCrystal, and many other applications. On initial inspection, Kozzoo may seem legitimate and useful, however, it is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
This application infiltrates systems without users’ permission, displays intrusive online advertisements, and continually records various user/system information relating to users' web browsing activity.
Kozzoo delivers coupon, banner, pop-up, and other similar advertisements. To achieve this, developers use a 'virtual layer' - a tool that allows placement of third party graphical content on any site. None of the displayed ads originate from users' visited websites and conceal underlying content, significantly diminishes the web browsing experience.
In addition, displayed ads usually lead to infectious websites. Therefore, even accidental clicks can result in high-risk computer infections.
Another downside is the tracking of users' web browsing activity. Kozzoo records visited websites, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic location), and other similar information.
This data may seem insignificant, however, it will contain personally identifiable details that developers of Kozzoo share with cooperating third party companies. It is highly probable that some of the private data will be misused to generate revenue. Therefore, data tracking can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall Kozzoo adware immediately.
Research shows that adware-type applications are often very similar. All give fake promises to enhance the web browsing experience by providing certain 'features'. These claims are merely attempts to trick users into believing that adware-type programs are legitimate. In fact, most provide no real value for regular users.
Adware is designed only to generate revenue for the developers. These apps merely generate intrusive advertisements (via the 'Pay Per Click’ [PPC] advertising model), gather private data (which is later sold to third parties), and occasionally cause unwanted browser redirects (thereby increasing the traffic of certain sites).
How did Kozzoo install on my computer?
Kozzoo has an official download website, however, it is also distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling'.
Therefore, many users install this PUP inadvertently. Developers hide PUPs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of the download/installation processes. Skipping this section often lead to inadvertent installation of bogus programs. Developers' revenue is dependent on the number of distributed programs and, therefore, these installations are never properly disclosed.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two main steps you should take to prevent this situation. First, closely analyze each step of the download/installation processes. Second, cancel all third party applications listed for download/installation.
