Froovr Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Froovr?
Froovr is a potentially unwanted program identical to GamesCrystal, GamesLagoon, GamingTreasure, and a number of other applications that offer functionality to play various Flash games.
Initially, Froovr might appear legitimate, however, due to rogue behavior (stealth installation, display of intrusive online advertisements, tracking of users' web browsing activity), Froovr is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
Following infiltration, Froovr delivers coupon, banner, pop-up, and other similar advertisements. To achieve this, developers employ a 'virtual layer', which allows placement of third party graphical content on any site.
Therefore, third party advertisements, which do not originate from users' visited websites, often conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the web browsing experience. Furthermore, these ads often redirect to malicious websites. Thus, clicking them risks further adware or malware infections.
Be aware that users' web browsing activity is continually monitored, since Froovr records website URLs visited, search queries entered into search engines, pages viewed, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, and other similar information. This data might be personally identifiable.
Furthermore, developers of Froovr share it with cooperating third party companies. Therefore, data-tracking can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, we strongly recommend that you eliminate Froovr adware from your system immediately.
Research shows that adware-type applications are often very similar. By claiming to enhance the web browsing experience, applications such as Froovr trick users into believing that these apps are legitimate. These claims are false, since adware is designed only to generate revenue for the developers. Most deliver no value for regular users.
Potentially unwanted programs such as Froovr gather personally identifiable information, deliver intrusive online advertisements, and cause unwanted browser redirects.
How did Froovr install on my computer?
Froovr has an official download website, however, it is also distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling'.
Therefore, many users install Froovr inadvertently. Developers know that users often skip most/all of the download/installation steps and intentionally hide PUPs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of these procedures. Users who rush and skip this section, often install bogus programs inadvertently.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two main steps you should take to prevent PUPs from infiltrating your computer. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software. Select the 'Custom/Advanced' settings and closely analyze each step. Secondly, decline all offers to download/install additional applications and cancel those already included.
