GamesLagoon Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is GamesLagoon?
GamesLagoon is a dubious application claiming to allow users to play various arcade Flash games. Initially, this app may seem legitimate, however, due to rogue behavior (installation without users' permission, tracking of users' web browsing activity, display of intrusive online advertisements), GamesLagoon is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
GamesLagoon employs a 'virtual layer' to deliver pop-up, banner, coupon, and other similar advertisements. The virtual layer enables placement of third party graphical content on any site, and since none of the displayed advertisements originate from the visited websites, underlying content is often concealed. This significantly diminishes the web browsing experience.
In addition, ads by GamesLagoon can redirect to malicious websites often containing infectious content - clicking them can lead to further adware or malware infections. Furthermore, GamesLagoon continually records IP addresses, website URLs visited, search queries, and other similar browsing-related information.
This data may seem insignificant, however, it might contain personally identifiable information that is shared with third parties (who misuse personal data to generate revenue). Thus, the presence of an information-tracking app on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, we strongly advise you to uninstall GamesLagoon immediately.
There are dozens of potentially unwanted programs identical to GamesLagoon (for example, ArcadeTropics, ArmorArcade, DonutArcade, etc.) offering identical features. Indeed, they have identical behavior, since none provide the functionality promised. Their purpose is to generate revenue for the developers.
Rather than providing any real value for users, GamesLagoon, and other identical applications, collect personally identifiable data and deliver intrusive content-concealing advertisements. Claims to enhance the web browsing experience are merely attempts to trick users to install.
How did GamesLagoon install on my computer?
Although this application has an official download website, many users install it inadvertently, since they do not pay enough attention during the download/installation processes.
Developers of adware-type applications use a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' and intentionally hide all PUPs within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' section of the download/installation process. Users who skip this section, often install bogus programs such as GamesLagoon inadvertently.
This exposes the system to risk of further infections and put users' privacy at risk.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Potentially unwanted programs are often distributed using the bundling method. Therefore, never rush the download or installation processes. Use the 'Custom/Advanced' settings to analyze each step. Furthermore, never accept offers to download/install third party applications and cancel those already included.
