Appdater Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Appdater?
Appdater is a dubious application that supposedly helps users to keep their installed software up-to-date. On initial inspection, Appdater may seem legitimate and useful, however, due to rogue behavior, this app is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
After stealthily infiltrating systems without users’ consent, Appdater generates intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' web browsing activity.
This adware uses a 'virtual layer' to generate pop-up, banner, and a number of other similar advertisements. The virtual layer enables placement of various third party graphical content on any site and, therefore, third party advertisements usually conceal underlying content of visited websites.
This significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience. In addition, some lead to malicious websites - clicking them can lead to further adware or malware infections. Research also shows that Appdater collects IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar information relating to users' web browsing habits.
This data may seem insignificant, however, it might contain personally identifiable details, which the developers of Appdater share with third parties. These parties aim to generate as much revenue as possible by misusing personally identifiable information.
This behavior can cause serious privacy issues. Therefore, we strongly advise you to uninstall Appdater adware immediately.
Appdater is regular adware and, thus, shares many similarities with other potentially unwanted programs such as TrumpKard, SysSecure, and Swiki. All adware falsely claims to enhance the web browsing experience, however, these fake promises are simply used to trick users to install.
Research shows that adware-type applications are designed only to generate revenue only for the developers. None these apps provide any real value for regular users - they cause unwanted browser redirects, track private data, and generate intrusive online advertisements.
How did Appdater install on my computer?
Although Appdater has an official download website, many users install it inadvertently by not expressing enough caution when downloading and installing software. Developers exploit this situation by intentionally concealing bogus programs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of the download or installation processes.
Users who skip this section, often install potentially unwanted programs inadvertently, thereby exposing their systems to risk of further infections and putting their privacy at risk.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two main steps you should take to prevent this situation. Firstly, PUPs are often distributed using the bundling method. Therefore, closely analyze the download and installation processes using the 'Custom/Advanced' settings.
Secondly, never accept any offers to download or install additional applications and opt-out of those already included. Most bundled software is dubious and, thus, should never be installed.
