TrendingUpNow Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is TrendingUpNow?
TrendingUpNow is a dubious application claiming to enhance the web browsing experience by providing notifications of latest online news - "TrendingUpNow - GET UP TO DATE ON TODAY'S TRENDS NEVER MISS THE LATEST TRENDING STORIES ONLINE".
These claims often trick users into believing that TrendingUpNow is legitimate, however, this app is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware, since it infiltrates systems without users’ permission, generates intrusive online advertisements, causes unwanted browser redirects, and continually gathers information relating to users' web browsing activity.
This PUP employs a 'virtual layer' to generate pop-up, banner, and other similar ads. The virtual layer enables placement of third party graphical content on any site and, therefore, additional ads do not originate from users' visited websites and often conceal underlying content. TrendingUpNow continually causes unwanted redirects to home.trendingupnow.com.
This behavior significantly diminishes the web browsing experience. Furthermore, ads displayed by this PUP can lead to malicious websites containing infectious content - clicking them risks further adware or malware infections.
TrendingUpNow continually tracks users' web browsing activity by recording various information such as web URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic location), etc. This data might be personally identifiable and shared with third parties who misuse private details to generate revenue.
Therefore, the presence of an information-tracking app on your system might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to remove TrendingUpNow adware from your system immediately.
TrendingUpNow is regular adware, and thus, shares many similarities with hundreds of other potentially unwanted programs such as ClearScreen Player, Stack Player, and EasyHotspot. Note that all of these apps falsely claim to enhance the web browsing experience, however, they provide no real value for users.
The actual purpose of adware is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than providing any of the functions promised, apps such as TrendingUpNow cause unwanted browser redirects, gather private data, and continually deliver intrusive online ads.
How did TrendingUpNow install on my computer?
This PUP is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, many users install it inadvertently without their consent, since they do not express enough caution during the download and installation processes, often skipping most/all steps.
Aware of this, developers intentionally conceal PUPs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of the download/installation procedures. Skipping this section can lead to inadvertent installation of bogus programs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
This situation can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software - select the 'Custom/Advanced' settings and carefully observe each step. Secondly, decline all offers to download or install third party applications and cancel those already included. Bundled software is mostly rogue and should never be installed.
