What is Stack Player?
Stack Player is a potentially unwanted program that supposedly allows users to watch online videos directly from their desktop - "The Stack Player is based on one simple but brilliant idea: an enjoyable online video viewing experience – without the browser!" Many users believe that this app is legitimate and useful, however, it is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
There are three main reasons for these negative associations - stealth installation without users' consent, tracking of web browsing activity, and display of intrusive online advertisements.
This adware delivers pop-up, banner, coupon, and a variety of other advertisements using a ‘virtual layer’ - a tool that enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. None of those advertisements originate from users' visited websites, and are likely to conceal underlying content, significantly diminishing the web browsing experience.
These ads can redirect to malicious websites containing infectious content - clicking them is risky and might cause further adware or malware infections. Another downside of Stack Player is data tracking. This PUP continually gathers various data that might be personally identifiable, and is shared with third parties who can misuse it to generate revenue.
Therefore, the presence of a data-tracking app on your system can result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly advise you to uninstall Stack Player adware immediately.
Stack Player is identical to Playthru Player and NowUSeeIt Player, and also very similar to hundreds of other adware-type applications such as Social2Search, Tide Search, Search Voyage, and Wajam. Most of these apps have identical behavior - they collect personally identifiable information and continually deliver intrusive online advertisements.
Research shows that adware-type apps are designed only to generate revenue for the developers. They are mostly useless for regular users, since they provide none of the functionality promised.
How did Stack Player install on my computer?
Stack Player is free for anyone to download on its official download, however, many users download and install this application inadvertently. This is due to deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling', which developers use to distribute Stack Player. Bundling is essentially stealth installation of PUPs with regular software.
Developers hide all potentially unwanted programs (such as Stack Player) within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of the download or installation processes. Therefore, users who skip this section often install bogus software inadvertently.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two main steps you should take to prevent this situation. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software - closely analyze each step using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings.
Secondly, cancel all third party applications listed for download/installation - bundled apps are often dubious and, therefore, you should never install them. Always download your chosen software from trusted sources.
