ClearScreen Player Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is ClearScreen Player?
ClearScreen Player is a deceptive application identical to NowUSeeIt Player and Playthru Player.
The developers claim that ClearScreen Player allows users to play online videos directly from the desktop without using any browser - "The ClearScreen Player is based on one simple but brilliant idea: an enjoyable online video viewing experience – without the browser!" .
This functionality may seem legitimate, however, ClearScreen Player is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware. This PUP infiltrates systems without users’ permission, continually tracks users' web browsing activity, and delivers intrusive online advertisements.
ClearScreen Player tracks Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar browsing-related information. This information may seem insignificant, however, it might contain personally identifiable details that the developers of ClearScreen Player share with third parties.
It is highly probable that some of this personally identifiable data will be misused to generate revenue - a situation that can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Another downside of this software is display of intrusive online advertisements. ClearScreen Player employs a 'virtual layer' to deliver various intrusive ads (for example, coupon, banner, pop-up, etc.).
These often conceal underlying content of visited websites, significantly diminishing the web browsing experience. Furthermore, some redirect to rogue sites containing malicious content and, thus, clicking them risks further adware or malware infections. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall ClearScreen Player immediately.
Adware-type applications are often very similar. Most give fake promises to enhance the Internet browsing experience by providing a number of 'valuable features'. These claims are merely attempts to trick users to install. In fact, applications such as ClearScreen Player are designed only to generate revenue for the developers - they provide no real value for users.
Adware-type programs cause unwanted browser redirects, track web browsing activity, and deliver intrusive online advertisements - these apps deliver no value for regular users.
How did ClearScreen Player install on my computer?
Developers promote ClearScreen Player using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software/apps. The developers know that many users do not express enough caution when downloading or installing software.
Therefore, they intentionally hide all PUPs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of these procedures. By skipping this section, users inadvertently install PUPs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
This situation can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, be cautious when downloading and installing software. Analyze these procedures using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Secondly, all additionally-included programs should be cancelled. Bundled software is mostly rogue and, thus, should never be installed.
