What is HORNET ransomware?
While inspecting new malware submissions to VirusTotal, our researchers discovered the HORNET ransomware. It is designed to encrypt data and make ransom demands for decryption.
After we executed a sample of HORNET on our test machine, it began encrypting files and displayed a fake Windows OS update screen during the process. The filenames of the encrypted files were changed into random character strings, e.g., a file originally titled "1.jpg"appeared as "Mi5wbmc=", "2.png" as "MS5qcGc=", etc.
Once the encryption was completed, the ransomware dropped a ransom note named "README_[random_number].txt" onto the desktop. This message lacked critical information, which leads us to believe that HORNET is still in development and may have been released for testing purposes.
