How to eliminate ClutchTrend adware and the ads it delivers
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is ClutchTrend?
While inspecting new submissions to VirusTotal, our researchers found the ClutchTrend application. Our analysis revealed that this app operates as advertising-supported software (adware). Furthermore, it is pertinent to mention that ClutchTrend is part of the AdLoad malware family.
ClutchTrend adware overview
Adware stands for advertising-supported software. It operates by running intrusive advertisement campaigns, i.e., displaying ads on visited websites and/or other interfaces.
These adverts endorse online scams, untrustworthy/hazardous software, and even malware. Some intrusive advertisements can perform stealthy downloads/installations when clicked.
Note that any legitimate products encountered via these ads are unlikely to be endorsed in this manner by their actual developers. Instead, this deceptive promotion is undertaken by scammers seeking to acquire illegitimate commissions by abusing the products' affiliate programs.
Adware may need certain conditions to deliver intrusive advert campaigns, such as compatible browser/system or user geolocation, visits to specific sites, etc. However, even if ClutchTrend does not display advertisements - its presence on a system endangers device and user safety.
Furthermore, this rogue application might have browser hijacker functions since they are typical for AdLoad advertising-supported software, although it did not exhibit any during testing.
What is more, ClutchTrend likely collects private data. Information of interest may include: browsing and search engine histories, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, finance-related data, etc. The gathered information can be monetized via sale to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
In summary, the presence of advertising-supported software like ClutchTrend on devices can lead to system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
We have analyzed thousands of adware-type apps; ExplorerIndex, NativeLightning, and AbsoluteValue are merely a couple of examples. This software typically looks harmless and promises "useful" and "advantageous" functionalities. However, these functions seldom work as advertised, and in most cases - they do not work at all.
How did ClutchTrend install on my computer?
Adware can be bundled (packed together) with ordinary software/media. Downloading from dubious channels (e.g., freeware and free file-hosting sites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and rushing installation - increase the risk of inadvertently permitting bundled content into the system.
Adware is pushed through intrusive advertisements as well. Once clicked on, some of these adverts can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user consent. Additionally, fake Adobe Flash Player updaters/installers are used in distribution.
Advertising-supported software is also promoted on dubious download pages and scam websites. Users typically enter these sites via redirects caused by webpages using rogue advertising networks, misspelled URLs, intrusive ads, spam browser notifications, or installed adware (with browser force-opening capabilities).
How to avoid installation of adware?
We strongly recommend researching software and downloading only from official/verified sources. Installation processes must be approached with caution, e.g., by reading terms, exploring available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting-out of all supplementary apps, extensions, tools, etc.
We advise being careful when browsing since fraudulent and malicious content usually appears legitimate. For example, intrusive adverts look ordinary and innocuous, but they redirect to highly questionable sites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).
If you experience such advertisements/redirects, check the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with ClutchTrend, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
