Losers Ransomware

What is Losers?

First discovered by malware security researcher, Toffee, Losers is a new variant of ransomware-type viruses Nemesis and Cry36. Once infiltrated, Losers encrypts stored data and appends names of encrypted files with the ".losers" extension. Note that, in some cases, Losers is named Damoclis Gladius Ransomware and appends the ".damoclis" extension.

Therefore, "sample.jpg" is renamed to either "sample.jpg.losers" or "sample.jpg.damoclis". After successfully encrypting files, Losers changes the desktop wallpaper and creates an HTML file ("HOWTODECRYPTFILES.html"), placing it in each folder containing encrypted files.

Hermes Ransomware

What is Hermes?

Hermes is ransomware-type malware discovered by Michael Gillespie. Once infiltrated, Hermes encrypts files using RSA-2048 cryptography. This malware does not append extensions to the encrypted files. Note that updated variant if this ransomware "HERMES 2.1" adds ".HRM" extension to encrypted files.

Following successful encryption, Hermes creates an HTML file containing a ransom-demand message ("DECRYPT_INFORMATION.html"), placing in each folder containing encrypted files.

It also provides a UNIQUE_ID_DO_NOT_REMOVE file that victims are encouraged to attach to email messages when communicating with the cyber criminals responsible for this malware.
