WizzAppChecker Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is WizzAppChecker?
Created by the developers of WizzWifi Hotspot and WizzScreen, WizzAppChecker is a dubious application that supposedly warns users when any malicious software is installed - "WizzAppChecker - Protect your computer from malware and get our warning notifications".
Initially, this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, WizzAppChecker is designed to infiltrate systems without users’ permission. In addition, this dubious application continually monitors users' web browsing activity and generates intrusive online ads. For these reasons, WizzAppChecker is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
Following infiltration, WizzAppChecker gathers Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic location), websites visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines, and other similar data.
This information may seem insignificant, however, it will contain personally identifiable details that the developers of WizzAppChecker share with third parties. It is highly probable that some of this data will be misused to generate revenue. Thus, the presence of an information-tracking app on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
Furthermore, WizzAppChecker continually delivers pop-up, banner and other similar advertisements. None originate from users' visited websites and conceal underlying content.
This significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience. In addition, some redirect to malicious websites and, therefore, even accidental clicks can lead to further high-risk adware or malware infections. For these reasons, you should eliminate WizzAppChecker immediately.
WizzAppChecker is regular adware and, thus, shares many similarities with other PUPs including FREETHEMEDIA, Hostify, and SecuriDex. Be aware that adware-type apps claim to provide 'valuable functionality' to trick users to install. In fact, they do not improve the web browsing experience in any way.
Their purpose is simply to generate revenue for the developers - rather than providing any real value, these apps collect personally identifiable information and deliver intrusive online advertisements.
How did WizzAppChecker install on my computer?
Research shows that although this application has an official download website, many users install it inadvertently. This is due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software), which developers use to distribute WizzAppChecker.
Many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software. Aware of this, developers hide PUPs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings. By skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of various infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent this situation, be cautious during the download/installation processes. Use the 'Custom/Advanced' settings. Check each step and opt-out of all additionally-included programs. Bundled software is mostly dubious and, thus, should never be installed.
