WizzWifi Hotspot Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is WizzWifi Hotspot?
Created by developers of WizzScreen, WizzWifi Hotspot is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that supposedly allows users to create a WiFi hotspot - "Wifi Hotspot - Share your connection with your friend on one click and transform your computer on a wifi hotspot." On initial inspection, this application may seem legitimate and useful, however, claims to provide 'valuable functions' are merely attempts to trick users to install.
In fact, WizzWifi Hotspot is classed as adware. One of the main reasons for these negative associations is stealth installation without users' consent. Following successful infiltration, WizzWifi Hotspot collects various information and continually generates intrusive online advertisements.
Once installed, WizzWifi Hotspot records IP addresses, website URLs visited, search queries entered into search engines, pages viewed, and other similar data. This information might contain personally identifiable details that the developers of WizzWifi Hotspot share with cooperating third party companies.
Users' private information is likely to be misused to generate revenue, thus, leading to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Furthermore, this PUP delivers various intrusive online ads such as banners or pop-ups.
Most appear identical to those generated by regular software/apps and, therefore, many users are unaware that ads generated by WizzWifi Hotspot do not originate from the visited websites. In fact, these ads conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
In addition, some lead to malicious sites and clicking them might cause further adware or malware infections. For these reasons, you should eliminate WizzWifi Hotspot PUP immediately.
This app shares many similarities with hundreds of other adware-type programs such as 4zip, FREETHEMEDIA Player and TestForSpeed. Although these apps offer different functionality, they have identical behavior. Adware-type programs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers and provide no real value for regular users.
Apps such as WizzWifi Hotspot simply collect personally identifiable information (which is sold to third parties) and deliver intrusive ads (via the 'Pay Per Click’ [PPC] advertising model). Some also cause unwanted browser redirects to various sites (thereby increasing their traffic).
How did WizzWifi Hotspot install on my computer?
WizzWifi Hotspot is distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software/apps. Research shows that many users do not pay enough attention when downloading and installing software.
They rush and skip virtually all steps. Aware of this, developers intentionally conceal bogus programs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of these procedures. By skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of various infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Be aware that many PUPs are distributed using the bundling method. Therefore, it is very important to closely analyze each step of the software download/installation processes. Use the 'Custom/Advanced' settings and opt-out of all additionally-included programs. Bundled software is mostly rogue and, thus, should never be installed.
