SecuriDex Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is SecuriDex?
SecuriDex is a bogus media player that supposedly prevents various security outbrakes. By falsely claiming to improve computer protection, SecuriDex attempts to give the impression of legitimate software.
Due to rogue behavior, however, SecuriDex is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware. This adware infiltrates systems without users’ permission, collects personally identifiable information, and delivers intrusive online advertisements.
Once infiltrated, SecuriDex gathers various data relating to users' web browsing activity including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine users' geo-locations), websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar data. This data might seem insignificant, however, it will contain private details that the developers of SecuriDex share with third parties.
Some of this collected data will be misused to generate revenue, thus, leading to serious privacy issues. In addition, SecuriDex generates pop-up, coupon, and other similar intrusive advertisements that do not originate from users' visited websites. These ads often conceal underlying website content, significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
In addition, these ads can lead to malicious sites - clicking them is risky and could result in further high-risk adware or malware infections. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to eliminate SecuriDex adware immediately.
Adware-type programs have similar characteristics. There are hundreds of other PUPs with virtually identical behavior to SecuriDex including, for instance, Snail Translate, WindowPolicies, Steel Cut, and Friv Launcher. By giving fake promises to enhance the web browsing experience, adware-type apps attempt to trick users to install.
In fact, virtually none provide the functionality promised. All adware is designed to generate revenue for the developers - rather than providing any of the functions promised, apps such as SecuriDex track Internet browsing activity, deliver intrusive ads, and/or cause unwanted browser redirects.
How did SecuriDex install on my computer?
Developers employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs (PUP) with regular (usually legitimate) software. Hiding PUPs within the 'Custom/Advanced' download or installation settings is popular, since many users do not pay enough attention during these procedures.
Rushing and skipping most/all steps often leads to inadvertent installation of PUPs, thus, exposing systems to risk of infection and putting users' privacy at risk.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two main steps you should take to prevent this situation. Firstly, analyze the 'Custom/Advanced' download or installation sections - bundled software is usually hidden within these stages. Secondly, decline all offers to download or install additional apps, and opt-out of those already included, since bundled apps are often rogue.
