Book Source Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Book Source?
Book Source is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) claiming to allow users to download various ebooks. Initially, this functionality might seem legitimate and useful, however, these false claims are simply attempts to trick users to install. In fact, Book Source is classed as adware.
One of the main reasons for this negative association is stealth installation without users' consent. Furthermore, Book Source continually records various user/system information and delivers intrusive online advertisements.
Book Source records information such as search queries entered into search engines, URLs visited, pages viewed, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic location), and so on. This data might seem insignificant, however, it can include private details that the developers of Book Source share with third parties.
There is a high probability that some of this personal data will be misused and lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Furthermore, Book Source generates pop-up, banner, intrusive, and other similar advertisements.
These ads do not originate from visited websites - by concealing underlying content, they significantly diminish the web browsing experience. In addition, they can lead to infectious websites - clicking them is risky and might cause further adware/malware infections. For these main reasons, you should uninstall Book Source adware immediately.
There are many potentially unwanted programs such as Book Source. Some of the examples are Trezaa, Storm Alerts, TopFlix and CaptureItPlus.
All claim to enhance the web browsing experience, and yet, none provide any real value for regular users. Adware-type programs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers. Applications such as Book Source collect personally identifiable information, track users' web browsing activity, and often cause unwanted browser redirects.
How did Book Source install on my computer?
Book Source has an official download website, however, it is also distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling', and thus many users install this application inadvertently.
Bundling is essentially stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software/apps - developers hide bundled software within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings of other applications' download/installation procedures. Thus, users who skip this section, often install potentially unwanted programs inadvertently.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent this situation, take two simple measure. Firstly, the download and installation processes should be performed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Secondly, do not install any third party applications - bundled software is mostly rogue and, thus, you should never accept any offers to download or install it.
