What is Screen Maker?
Screen Maker is a dubious adware-type program that claims to enable screenshot functionality - "Screen Maker - Simple way to make screenshots! Our software is simple and clever. Press CTRL+ALT+4 and screenshot will appear in your Screenshot folder."
By giving these fake promises, Screen Maker often tricks users to install. This application also infiltrates systems without users’ consent and is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP). In addition, Screen Maker continually records various user/system information and tracks Internet browsing activity.
After successful system infiltration, Screen Maker collects search queries entered into search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.), website URLs visited, pages viewed, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic location), and other similar data.
Many users are unaware that this collected data may be personally identifiable and shared by the developers of Screen Maker with cooperating third parties. There is a high probability that this information will be misused to generate revenue. Therefore, the presence of a data-tracking app such as Screen Maker on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
Furthermore, Screen Maker delivers intrusive online advertisements. This PUP employs a 'virtual layer' to generate pop-up, banner, and other similar advertisements that conceal underlying website content. These ads diminish the Internet browsing experience and often redirect to malicious websites containing infectious content.
Therefore, clicking them can lead to further adware or malware infections. If you feel that Screen Maker has been installed without your consent, remove this application immediately.
Research shows that adware-type programs have similar characteristics. For instance, as with Screen Maker, Shopper-Expert, Skyrocket Player, Giant Savings, and CoronaBorealis also claim to enhance the Internet browsing experience by enabling a number of 'valuable features'. In fact, claims to enable various useful features are merely attempts to trick users to install.
Adware-type programs deliver no real value for users. These apps are designed only to generate revenue for the developers by generating intrusive online advertisements and tracking Internet browsing activity.
How did Screen Maker install on my computer?
Although Screen Maker has an official download website, many users install this application inadvertently by not paying enough attention during the download and installation processes.
Developers know that many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software and intentionally conceal bogus programs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings. By rushing these stages, users often install potentially unwanted programs such as Screen Maker inadvertently.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Many PUPs are hidden within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings and, therefore, you should closely analyze the download and installation procedures. Follow each step and cancel all third party programs listed for download or installation.
