CoronaBorealis Ads

What is CoronaBorealis?
CoronaBorealis is a dubious application falsely claiming to provide various 'valuable features'. On initial inspection, this program may seem legitimate, however, CoronaBorealis is classed as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
One of the main reasons for these negative associations is stealth installation - CoronaBorealis often infiltrates systems without users’ consent. In addition, the app generates various intrusive advertisements and tracks Internet browsing activity.
This PUP employs a 'virtual layer' to generate pop-up, banner, and other similar advertisements. These ads conceal underlying content of visited websites. This app often adds a search bar to the top of each web page visited. The bar redirects to search.whitesmoke.com or trovi.com.
By displaying content-overlaying advertisements, CoronaBorealis significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, it is highly probable that displayed ads will lead to malicious websites containing infectious content - clicking them is risky and may cause further computer infections.
Furthermore, this adware collects various information relating to Internet browsing activity (for example, IP addresses, websites visited, etc.). Be aware that some of this data might be personally identifiable. The developers of this PUP share collected information with third parties who misuse personal data to generate revenue.
This behavior can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you continually encounter ads generated by this adware (usually marked as 'Powered by CoronaBorealis'), uninstall all recently-installed suspicious programs.
There are hundreds of programs with similar behavior to CoronaBorealis. For instance, applications such as AnyFlix, WebDiscover, and Elements Peruse also claim to enable valuable functions. These claims are merely attempts to trick users to install.
In fact, adware-type programs never provide the functionality promised - they cause unwanted browser redirects, collect personal data, and deliver intrusive online advertisements. They are designed only to generate revenue for the developers and are useless for users.
How did CoronaBorealis install on my computer?
CoronaBorealis is distributed as a 'bundle' with other programs. The developers know that most users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software. Therefore, they intentionally conceal PUPs within the 'Custom' or either 'Advanced download/installation settings.
Users who carelessly rush these procedures, and skip most/all steps, commonly install bogus programs inadvertently.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent this situation, be cautious when downloading and installing software. Observe each step using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Furthermore, all offers to download or install additional applications should be declined.
