Microworks PC Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Microworks PC?
Identical to Mintcast, Microworks PC is a deceptive application that supposedly helps developers to promote and monetize their software.
On initial inspection, this application may seem legitimate, however, this software generates intrusive online advertisements and tracks Internet browsing activity. For this reason, Microworks PC is categorized as a potentially unwanted adware-type program (PUP).
Once infiltrated, Microworks PC displays coupon, pop-up, banner, and other similar ads. Ads generated by Microworks PC may seem identical to regular advertisements and, thus, many users are unaware that they do not originate from their visited websites.
By delivering content-concealing advertisements, Microworks PC significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience. Some ads might redirect to malicious sites - clicking them can can lead to further high-risk adware or malware infections.
In addition, Microworks PC gathers various Internet browsing-related information including IP addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc.
This information is shared with third parties who can misuse it to generate revenue. Thus, the presence of an information-tracking app, such as Microworks PC, on your system could lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly advise that you uninstall this PUP immediately.
Microworks PC shares many similarities with other bogus applications such as Email Descontos, Splendor Search, and Search Window. As with Microworks PC, these applications also give fake promises to enhance the Internet browsing experience by providing a number of valuable features.
In fact, these apps are designed only to generate revenue for developers. They do not enable any of the functionality promised. Microworks PC, and other adware-type programs, simply generate intrusive online advertisements and track Internet browsing activity.
How did Microworks PC install on my computer?
Although Microworks PC has an official download website, many users install this application inadvertently. This is due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of third party apps with regular software/apps.
The developers know that many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software and, therefore, intentionally hide potentially unwanted programs within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' download/installation settings. By skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of infection, thereby putting their privacy at risk.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. The download and installation processes should not be rushed. Pay close attention and analyze each step using the 'Custom/Advanced' settings. Furthermore, opt-out of all additionally-included applications, since they are often rogue.
