Windoweather Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Windoweather?
Windoweather is a dubious application claiming to be legitimate. By offering weather-forecast functionality, this application often tricks users into believing that it is legitimate and useful.
In fact, this app infiltrates systems without users’ permission, tracks Internet browsing activity, and delivers intrusive online advertisements. It is, therefore, categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Following successful infiltration, Windoweather tracks Internet browsing activity and collects various browsing-related data. Users often believe that URLs visited, search queries, pages viewed, IP addresses, and other similar data is insignificant, however, these data types might contain personal details that are shared with third party companies.
Rogue third parties often misuse personal data to generate revenue. Therefore, the presence of an information-tracking app such as Windoweather on your system may lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Furthermore, this app generates intrusive online advertisements.
To achieve this, developers employ a 'virtual layer', which allows them to place third party graphical content on any visited website.
By concealing underlying content, displayed ads diminish the Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, some will redirect to malicious sites, thereby causing high-risk adware or malware infections. For these reasons, we strongly advise you to uninstall Windoweather adware immediately.
This PUP shares similarities with hundreds of other adware-type programs such as Desktop-play, MovieDea, Games Desktop, and Royal Raid.
These applications also give fake promises to enhance the Internet browsing experience by providing a number of 'valuable features', however, research results shows that the purpose of these applications is to generate revenue for the developers.
They deliver no real value for users. Potentially unwanted programs such as Windoweather generate intrusive online advertisements, cause unwanted browser redirects, and track Internet browsing activity.
How did Windoweather install on my computer?
Although Windoweather is free for anyone to download on its official website, many users install this app inadvertently. This is due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling', which developers employ to distribute Windoweather. Bundling is essentially stealth installation of third party software with regular software/apps.
The developers know that users often do not pay enough attention when downloading and installing software and, thus, bundled software is usually hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. By rushing the download and installation processes, and skipping most/all steps, users expose their systems to risk of various infections.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The only way to protect your system from adware-type infections is to closely analyze the download and installation processes. Many PUPs are concealed within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings and, therefore, it is important to closely analyze each step of these procedures and opt-out of all additionally-included apps.
