PC Matic Unwanted Application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is PC Matic?
The PC Matic application supposedly protects systems from various infections - "PC Matic provides superior security protection over all security products, free or otherwise, on the market." Initially, this application may seem legitimate and useful, however, PC Matic is often distributed with other software, thus classing it as a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Most potentially unwanted programs are rogue - cause unwanted browser redirects, gather various browsing-related information, and deliver intrusive online advertisements.
The collected information (IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, geo-location, etc.) will often contain personal details that the developers of PUPs share with third parties who misuse personal details to generate revenue. Thus, tracking of personally identifiable information can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
Furthermore, pop-up, interstitial, transitional, banner, search, coupon, and other intrusive online advertisements do not originate from users' visited websites. By overlaying website content, these ads significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience.
Additionally, some redirect to suspicious sites containing malicious content - clicking them is risky and may lead to further adware or malware infections. Although PC Matic exhibits no direct dubious behavior, it infiltrates systems without users’ permission.
Thus, the presence of any potentially unwanted program on your system can significantly diminish computer performance. If you feel that PC Matic has been installed without your consent, you should remove it immediately.
Most potentially unwanted programs are designed to generate revenue for the developers - users receive no real value. Rather than providing any useful features, DNS-Keeper Royal Raid, Triangle Trail, and Results Hub (among hundreds of other apps) deliver intrusive online advertisements, cause unwanted browser redirects, and gather various browsing-related information.
How did PC Matic install on my computer?
PC Matic has an official download website, however, it is also distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling'. Therefore, many users install this app inadvertently, since they do not pay enough attention during the download and installation processes.
The developers know that many users rush these processes and skip most/all steps and intentionally conceal installation of PUPs within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. By skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of infection.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. Installation of potentially unwanted programs can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, do not rush the download or installation processes. Secondly, opt-out of all additionally-included applications, since there is a high probability that they will be infectious.
