What is Triangle Trail?
Triangle Trail is a deceptive browser extension identical to SmartShop, Money Viking, and tens of other potentially unwanted programs developed by SuperWeb LLC.
Triangle Trail claims to save time and money when shopping online - "We're passionate about improving web by providing the best tools to enhance the browsing experience, from searching the web to comparing online deals to find the best prices. We've combined all of our great ideas into the Triangle Trail product suite, a FREE set of tools that work to make your browsing experience... better!"
These fake promises often trick users into believing that Triangle Trail is a legitimate program, however, due to its rogue behavior (stealth installation, display of intrusive ads, tracking of Internet browsing activity), Triangle Trail is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
This PUP is generates pop-up, price comparison, banner, interstitial, transitional, full-page, search, coupon, and other similar intrusive online advertisements. To achieve this, developers of Triangle Trail employ a 'virtual layer', which enables placement of third party graphical content on any site.
By concealing underlying content, third party advertisements significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, some redirect users to malicious websites - clicking them is risky and may cause further adware or malware infections.
Research shows that Triangle Trail gathers various browsing-related information such as IP addresses, unique identifier numbers, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc. This information may seem insignificant, however, it will contain personally identifiable details that SuperWeb LLC shares with third party companies.
There is a high probability that personal data will be misused to generate revenue - this can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft and, therefore, Triangle Trail should be uninstalled immediately.
Triangle Trail Privacy Policy statement regarding data collection:
We only share or sell your non-public personal information with non-affiliated third parties when we believe doing so is permitted by you or authorized by this Privacy Policy. In addition, the Company may share your personal information with our parent, subsidiary or affiliate companies without restriction.
SuperWeb LLC has released several hundred identical PUPs. These applications are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
Rather than providing the functionality promised, apps such as Triangle Trail generate various intrusive online advertisements (via the 'Pay Per Click’ [PPC] advertising model) and collect personally identifiable information (which is later sold to third party companies). They provide no real value for users.
How did Triangle Trail install on my computer?
Triangle Trail has an official download website, however, many users install this application inadvertently, since they do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software. Developers conceal potentially unwanted programs such as Triangle Trail within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings.
By rushing the download and installation processes, users often install rogue software inadvertently, thereby exposing their systems to risk of further infection and compromising their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent installation of adware-type programs, be attentive during the download and installation processes. Closely analyze these processes using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, since potentially unwanted programs (that should be cancelled) are usually hidden within this section.
