ZX Player Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is ZX Player?
Created by the developers of FrameFox Shop, ZX Player supposedly allows users to play various media formats, watch YouTube, etc. - "ZX Player is the media player that fills all your needs. With dozens of advanced features and built-in codecs it can handle any media format, and can play Audio CDs, DVDs, (S)VCDs, TV / Radio cards, YouTube™ and SHOUTcast streams and even incomplete or damaged media files."
These fake promises to provide useful functionality often trick users to install, however, be aware that due to its rogue behavior, ZX Player is categorized as an adware-type potentially unwanted program (PUP). Following successful installation, ZX Player generates intrusive online advertisements and collects various user/system information.
ZX Player continually monitors Internet browsing activity and gathers various details including IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, geo-locations, and other similar browsing-related data. This may seem insignificant, however, the details may contain personally identifiable information, which the developers of ZX Player share with third parties.
Personal data can be misused with to generate revenue and, thus, the presence of an information-tracking app such as ZX Player on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. ZX Player generates various intrusive online advertisements that appear to be from regular software/apps.
In fact, none originate from users' visited websites. Third party ads conceal underlying web content - clicking them may cause further computer infections, since they often lead to malicious sites containing bogus content. For these reasons, you should uninstall ZX Player immediately.
ZX Player shares many similarities with hundreds of other adware-type applications such as Best YouTube Downloader, PPS Video Player, JellySplit, and TermTrident. By falsely claiming to improve the Internet browsing experience, these apps attempt to give the impression of legitimate software.
None, however, provide the features promised - they diminish the Internet browsing experience and pose a threat to users' privacy/computer systems by generating intrusive online advertisements and tracking Internet browsing activity. The purpose of adware-type programs is to generate revenue for the developers - they provide no real value for users.
How did ZX Player install on my computer?
This PUP is proliferated using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of third party applications with regular software/apps), and for this reason, many users install it inadvertently.
Users commonly do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software and, thus, developers intentionally conceal potentially unwanted programs within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings. Skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of PUPs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent installation of adware-type programs, be attentive during the download and installation processes. Closely analyze each step using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, otherwise you will be unable to opt-out of (malicious) bundled software.
