VIDKit Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is VIDKit?
Identical to DNS-Keeper and DNS Unlocker, VIDKit is a deceptive application claiming to provide functionality that allows users to download various videos and movies.
These false claims often trick users into believing that VIDKit is a legitimate app, however, due to its rogue behavior, this app is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). VIDKit infiltrates systems without users’ permission, generates intrusive online advertisements, and collects information relating to Internet browsing activity.
VIDKit records geographic location, IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, cookies, web beacons, and other browsing-related data. This information is later shared with third party companies.
Be aware that some of the collected data is personally identifiable and it is highly probable that these details will be misused to generate revenue - behavior that can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Advertisements generated by this app include pop-up, banner, targeted video, and coupon.
Although most redirect users to various e-commerce sites, some redirect to infectious web pages. Thus, clicking advertisements generated by VIDKit adware is risky and may cause further computer infections. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall VIDKit.
Although VIDKit is identical to the applications mentioned above, it has similar characteristics to other regular adware. Search Know, Qword Browser, MobilePCStarterKit, and FlashBeat also claim to enable valuable functionality, however, after tricking users to install, these apps provide none of the features promised.
They generate intrusive online advertisements (using the 'Pay Per Click’ [PPC] advertising model) and collect personally identifiable information (which is later sold to third party companies). The purpose of this adware is to generate revenue for the developers.
How did VIDKit install on my computer?
This application is proliferated using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling'. This method is essentially stealth installation of additional programs with regular software/apps.
Developers conceal rogue apps within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' download/installation settings, since they are aware that many users skip this section. By rushing these processes, users often install third party apps without their consent.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Installation of adware-type programs can be prevented by taking two simple steps. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software. Carefully analyze each step using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Secondly, never accept any offers to download or install third party software - there is a high probability that bundled apps will be rogue.
