Win Security Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Win Security?
Identical to Safe Browsing, Browsing Secure, and Win Guard, Win Security is presented as a legitimate app that protects systems from entering malicious sites - "Win Security. This browser application is designed to secure your browser, while surfing the Internet".
Many users believe that this app is useful, however, Win Security is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware. There are three main reasons for these negative associations: stealth installation without users' consent, display of intrusive online ads, and tracking of Internet browsing activity.
Win Security is designed to display intrusive online advertisements using a ‘virtual layer’, which enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. None of the ads originate from users' visited websites and conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Be aware that price comparison, coupon, and other ads generated by Win Security do not differ from those delivered by regular software/apps, however, some redirect to malicious sites. Rather than protecting the system, Win Security poses a direct threat - clicking these ads can result in high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, Win Security collects Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, operating system, language settings, geo-location, time zone, browser type and browsing details (website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc.), and various other data that might contain personally identifiable information.
This information is shared with third parties who often misuse personal details to generate revenue. Thus, having an information-tracking application installed can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall Win Security immediately.
Adware-type programs in general have similar characteristics. There are hundreds of other PUPs giving fake promises to provide useful features including SpaceSoundPro, REWINUP Cinema, FavGenius, and SkinnyPlayer. These may seem legitimate, however, none deliver any real value for users.
Adware-type programs such as Win Security are designed to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than enabling the functionality offered, these apps deliver intrusive advertisements and collect personal identifiable details.
How did Win Security install on my computer?
Although Win Security has an official download website, many users install this app without their consent. This is due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' used to distribute this adware. Bundling is essentially stealth installation of PUPs with regular software/apps.
The developers are aware that many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software, and for this reason, they conceal bogus apps such as Win Security within the 'Custom/Advanced' download and installation settings.
Unaware of this, users often rush these processes and skip most steps, thereby inadvertently installing potentially unwanted programs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Prevent this situation by taking two simple steps. Firstly, never rush when downloading and installing software - carefully analyze each step using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Secondly, decline all offers to download or install additional programs, since bundled software is mostly rogue.
