BrowserMaintainace Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is BrowserMaintainace?
BrowserMaintainace is a deceptive application claiming to enhance the Internet browsing experience. By giving fake promises to enable useful features, BrowserMaintainace often tricks users into believing that it is legitimate. In fact, BrowserMaintainace continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity and delivers intrusive online advertisements.
Furthermore, it often infiltrates systems without users’ permission, and for these reasons, it is categorized as a potentially unwanted adware-type program (PUP).
The types of advertisements generated by this adware include pop-up, banner, and coupon ads. All are generated using a ‘virtual layer’, which enables placement of third party graphical content on any web page, and therefore, none originate from the visited sites.
Many users are unaware that these ads are third party and conceal underlying web content. Thus, advertisements generated by BrowserMaintainace significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience. Some redirect to malicious sites, and so, accidental clicks might result in high-risk adware or malware infections.
In addition, BrowserMaintainace tracks Internet browsing activity and gathers various information that might be personally identifiable. Be aware that IP addresses, URLs visited, search queries entered into search engines (Google, Bing, etc.), pages viewed, and other collected information is shared with third parties who are likely to misuse personal data to generate revenue.
Therefore, having this adware installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues. If you are concerned with your privacy and Internet browsing safety, uninstall BrowserMaintainace immediately.
BrowserMaintainace is virtually identical to other regular adware such as Astro Find, Mind Cast Networks, and hundreds of other applications also claiming to enable useful functionality. Despite this, adware-type applications are designed simply to generate revenue for the developers. They provide none of the features promised.
They generate intrusive advertisements (using the 'Pay Per Click’ [PPC] advertising model) and track personally identifiable data (which is later shared with third party companies to generate revenue).
How did BrowserMaintainace install on my computer?
The developers distribute this application using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of potentially unwanted programs with regular software/apps.
Third party applications are often concealed within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Research shows that many users do not expect PUPs to be hidden. Rushing the download and installation processes, thus, leads to inadvertent installation of rogue software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
This situation can be prevented by closely analyzing the download and installation processes. Third party applications are usually hidden, and therefore, check the 'Custom/Advanced' settings for any bundled software and cancel it. Most bundled applications are rogue - never install them.
