What is RecommendationBox?
The RecommendationBox application claims to provide features to save time and money while shopping online (for example, comparison shopping, display of coupons and special deals/discounts on various online stores) - "The smartest way to buy online. Discover the best discounts while you are surfing on your favorite sites."
This application may seem legitimate and useful, however, be aware that RecommendationBox is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). This is due to its behavior, which includes stealth installation, display of intrusive ads, and collection of user/system information.
As with other regular adware, RecommendationBox employs a virtual layer to display pop-up, coupon, banner, and other similar ads. None originate from the visited websites and conceal underlying content, thus, diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Most redirect to websites offering certain features, online stores, and other similar e-commerce sites, however, some may redirect to malicious websites containing infectious content - clicking them can lead to high-risk computer infections.
RecommendationBox is also designed to continually track users' Internet browsing activity, gathering IP addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar data.
Some of this data might contain personal details that developers later share with third parties. Thus, the presence of RecommendationBox on your system can result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall this application immediately.
RecommendationBox is similar to other applications offering identical features to encourage users to install. Despite their claims, neither RecommendationBox, nor Oh My Coupons, PriceFountain, Groover and other adware-type apps, provide any of the functionality promised.
They are designed to generate revenue by displaying advertisements and collecting personal data - they deliver no real value to users.
How did RecommendationBox install on my computer?
RecommendationBox is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, many users install this app inadvertently without their consent. RecommendationBox is widely distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of rogue apps with the chosen software/apps.
The developers are aware that many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software, and therefore, hide applications such as RecommendationBox within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. By rushing the download and installation processes, users often install PUPs inadvertently, which might lead to further computer infections or even identity theft.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
All users are responsible for their own computer safety. The key computer safety is caution. Never rush when downloading and installing applications. Use the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, follow each step, and decline all offers to install additional apps.
