What is PriceFountain?
Created by DealPly Technologies Ltd, PriceFountain is a rogue application claiming to save time and money by enabling coupons, comparison shopping, and displaying special deals/discounts available within online stores. Although this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, be aware that it is considered to be a potentially unwanted program (PUP) or adware.
The developers of this rogue application employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with other software) to install PriceFountain on systems without consent.
After successful infiltration, PriceFountain tracks users' Internet browsing activity by recording various information such as IP addresses (to determine users' geo-locations), operating systems and browser types, website URLs visited, pages viewed, unique identifier numbers, and other similar details that may be personally identifiable. This behavior may result in serious privacy issues or identity theft.
Furthermore, PriceFountain delivers various of intrusive online advertisements including banner and text-link ads. Clicking these generated advertisements is likely to cause high-risk adware or malware infections, and for these reasons, you are strongly advised to eliminate PriceFountain from your Internet browsers.
During research, PriceFountain was mostly distributed via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites including download.com, softonic.com, soft32.com, etc.
Download managers are used by these websites as free service monetization tools, since they offer installation of promoted (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') applications together with the chosen free software.
Thus, careless download and installation of freeware often results in installation of PriceFountain or other similar adware/malware infections (for example, KNCTR, Offer Boulevard, Insta Share, etc.)
Research shows that rather than enabling the promised functionality, PriceFountain and other PUPs diminish browser performance and may cause high-risk infections. Their actual purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements and sharing the collected information with third parties.
Installation of these rogue applications can be prevented by closely inspecting each step of the free software download process and declining any offers to install additional programs.
Furthermore, if you are installing already downloaded software, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Typical' or 'Quick' - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. Internet users who have already installed PriceFountain should read the removal instructions provided to eliminate this adware from their systems.
