NowUSeeIt Player Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is NowUSeeIt Player?
NowUSeeIt Player is a deceptive app claiming to provide a feature allowing users to play online videos without using Internet browsers - "The NowUSeeIt Player is based on one simple but brilliant idea: an enjoyable online video viewing experience – without the browser! The NowUSeeIt Player offers seamless online video viewing directly on your desktop while working, browsing the Web or gaming."
On initial inspection, this application may seem legitimate and useful, however, NowUSeeIt Player is classed as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). After NowUSeeIt Player successfully infiltrates the system without users' permission, it displays intrusive online advertisements and tracks Internet browsing activity.
This PUP employs a virtual layer to display banner, coupon, and other similar intrusive advertisements. None originate from visited sites and conceal underlying content, thus diminishing the Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, some redirect to malicious sites containing infectious content - clicking them might lead to further computer infections.
NowUSeeIt Player continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity and gathers various software and hardware information that is later shared with third party companies.
Some of these details might contain personally identifiable details, and therefore, the presence of NowUSeeIt Player on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly recommend that you uninstall this adware immediately.
Although this adware is identical to Playthru Player, there are hundreds of other PUPs (such as FutureGames, Selection Tools, and CheckMeUp) with very similar characteristics (most adware-type applications have identical behavior). All claim to enhance the Internet browsing experience, however, none provide the functionality promised.
The purpose of adware is to generate revenue by displaying ads and collecting personal data - users receive no real value.
How did NowUSeeIt Player install on my computer?
NowUSeeIt Player is distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of rogue applications with regular software/apps. Developers conceal rogue applications within the 'Custom/Advanced' settings, since many users do not pay enough attention during the download and installation of software.
When downloading and installing software, they skip most/all steps and often go on to inadvertently install rogue applications, thereby exposing their systems to risk of further infection.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Be attentive when downloading and installing software. Use the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings during both of these processes. Decline all offers to download or install software - there is a risk that third party apps are bogus. The key to computer safety is caution. Do not rush the download or installation processes.
