What is Content Defender?
Content Defender (created by Artex management S.A.) is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) claiming to protect computers from malicious content - "Content Defender is a tool created to protect your PC against unwanted and malicious content. Our development team worked hard to provide you with most actual content protection system."
Although these claims may trick some users into believing that Content Defender is a legitimate and useful app, it is categorized as adware.
This potentially unwanted program (PUP) usually infiltrates systems without users' consent. Following successful installation, Content Defender displays intrusive online advertisements and collects various Internet browsing-related information.
This adware generates a wide rage of advertisements including in-text link, banner, coupon, various e-commerce offers, and so on. To achieve this, developers of Content Defender (Artex Management S.A.) employ a virtual layer, which enables placement of any graphical content on visited websites.
Although most of these advertisements redirect to online stores and other similar e-commerce websites, there is a high probability that some will redirect to rogue sites containing infectious content.
Clicking the ads can result in high-risk adware or malware infections - none originate from the visited sites and conceal underlying content, thus, significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience. Another downside of Content Defender is information tracking.
Content Defender collects Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, Internet service provider (ISP), computer information (CPU, operating system, etc.), browsing details (websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc.), and other similar information that may contain personally identifiable details.
This gathered information is later shared with third parties who can misuse it to generate revenue. For this reason, having Content Defender installed on your system may lead to various privacy issues. We strongly recommend that you uninstall this adware immediately.
Content Defender Privacy Policy regarding information sharing:
We may share your information with others for the following purposes: To provide the Services, through Our technology, Our affiliates, service providers and/or business partners; If the ownership or management of our Services is transferred to another entity as a result of a merger or an acquisition; We may share the information with affiliated companies such as subsidiaries, sister-companies and parent companies to enhance our and our affiliates’ ability to provide and offer our and their services;
There are hundreds of other PUPs identical to Content Defender including Shoppr, Oasis Space, and High Stairs. These apps offer useful features simply to trick users to install. Once installed, neither Content Defender, nor any other adware, provides the functionality promised.
The purpose of these PUPs is to generate revenue by delivering advertisements and collecting personally identifiable information.
How did Content Defender install on my computer?
Content Defender often stealthily infiltrates systems during download or installation of other software. This deceptive software marketing method is called 'bundling'.
The developers know that many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software, and thus, hide rogue applications such as Content Defender within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. By rushing these processes and skipping this section, users inadvertently install rogue applications and expose their systems to risk of further infection.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
This type of computer infection can be prevented by closely analyzing the download and installation procedures. Follow each step and decline all offers to download/install additional programs.
Furthermore, a completely safe download and installation can be only performed by using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - never skip this section, since it will reveal any concealed applications listed for installation and enable you to cancel them.
