DealXplorer Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is DealXplorer?
DealXplorer is an application that claims to save time and money by displaying various coupons, enabling comparison shopping, and other shopping-related features - "DealXplorer is a light-weight browser extension that simply shows you better deals before you shop online, and save you money!".
On initial inspection, this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, DealXplorer is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). The reason for these negative associations is the rogue behavior exhibited by DealXplorer adware including stealth infiltration, display of intrusive ads, and tracking of Internet browsing activity.
DealXplorer infiltrates systems without users' permission and is delivered with a browser-hijacking application that redirects users to the oursurfing.com website. DealXplorer is developed to display coupon, pop-up, banner, and other similar advertisements.
This is achieved using a virtual layer, which allows placement any graphical content on visited websites. Advertisements generated by this application do not originate from the visited site and overlay underlying website content, thereby diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Furthermore, this application gathers various Internet browsing-related information including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, websites visited, search queries, pages viewed, and other similar information, which is shared with third party companies who can misuse it to generate revenue.
Some of the gathered data may contain personally identifiable details, and thus, having DealXplorer installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
There are hundreds of rogue adware-type applications offering identical features including, for example, PopDeals, ComparingGenie, and Firstoffer.
All adware claims to improve the Internet browsing experience in various ways. Despite this, applications such as DealXplorer are developed to generate revenue by displaying advertisements (via the 'Pay Per Click' - PPC - advertising model) and collecting information (which is later shared with third parties to generate revenue).
How did DealXplorer install on my computer?
As with most regular adware, DealXplorer is distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software/apps), and thus, it usually infiltrates without users' consent.
The developers are aware that many users do not pay enough attention when downloading and installing software, and therefore, intentionally hide applications such as DealXplorer within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Unaware of this, users who rush the download and installation processes inadvertently install rogue applications.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. Do not rush the download or installation procedures. Closely analyze each step and opt-out of all bundled third party applications listed for installation. In addition, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any concealed rogue apps listed for installation and allow you to cancel them.
